Not the comedian but never the less this Billy Connolly was certainly a popular guy down at Lime street Station on December. 27th.
......................................

Liverpool Daily Echo

January 10, 2007, Wednesday

HEADLINE: Letter: You say - Fare deal for cabbies

BYLINE: Billy Connolly, Bootle

I WAS interested to read Leanne, Stock-bridge Village's account of her difficulty in hiring a cab on New Year's Eve (ECHO Letters, Jan 4)

I am a Sefton hackney cab driver and I consider myself to be honest and I do the job as it should be done. On December 27th I was given a job in Bootle to take a fare to Lime St Station. I was then asked by the operator to pick up a young lady at the Adelphi Hotel.

As I arrived at the station at 7am I was ambushed by about half a dozen different fares, all offering stupid amounts of money, eg: pounds 40 to Bootle, pounds 60 to Litherland, etc. I told the people that I was not interested in the money and I already had a fare to pick up. I was called all the names under the sun just for doing my job.

Taxi drivers do like to celebrate Christmas and New Year so fare and a half is a small price to pay considering what other industries would charge for their services.

Billy Connolly, Bootle

The public are obviously use to paying cherrypickers.

I don't see a problem with cherry-pickers. It's all about supply and demand.

You don't see any-other "business" selling itself short at a time where a premium could be charged?

Money talks bullsh** walks as they say :D

Show me the money

BTW

When you walk into a lawyers he doesn't discount, he dictates his value - no one tells him his worth.

Seems fair enough to me

The problem I see with cherry pickers is they always leave the s*** for the likes of me.

Also is it right to blank punters that use you all year, for ones that just happen to have money to burn once a year? :?

Skull... stay off the wacky baccy, you don't go looking for a lawyer at 3 o'clock in the morning, and you have plenty of choice which particular one you use and how much he charges, as for cherry pickers I am sure that they do not think that they are doing anything wrong, until they are called upon to explain why they charge so much and then they usually lie through their teeth, they hide amongst the rest of their workmates and do not care the damage they do this trade, if they were to drive a taxi with cherry-pick on the side, they would soon be out of business........

What bollix

It's the the way you word it.

You don't have to state a price, but you can accept an offer.

All you have to do is say "show me the money" and point to the queue at the rank, believe me, you'll get all sorts of offers.

Especially if it's raining or freezing cold.

I call this using your initiative and as I've said before, 'money talks bullsh** walks'.

So Mr T, are you walking, or are you talking?

If people are prepared to pay more why do it for less?

Oh and BTW I don't see many councillors picking up punters at 3 o'clock in the morning.

I think it's called 'survival of the fittest'. Why should someone do the job for less to benefit you?

As for 'blanking the punters that use you all year'. They simply don't care, no more than the guy prepared to part with his wedge rather than freezing his nuts off by standing in a rank.

At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. All the punters get home, just some a few quid lighter, and a little later, than others, the same goes for the driver's.

'Such as life as they say'

BTW, I never wait for a taxi. Nor do I stand in ranks freezing my nuts off. I walk up to a taxi stick the money in the driver's face and tell him where I want to go, and let me tell you it works every time.

The driver goes off as happy as a sand boy.

Money talks....

The way you see it, it is quite OK to rip the customers off, day after day week after week, and you wonder why your work is dropping off,

What, people want to throw money at you is 'ripping people off'? I don't ask, I just make sure they can see the benefit. Then I just take the money they offer and do the job. They on the other-hand avoid the scrum with the drunks on the rank.

I don't deny them a choice. They don't have to offer. And no one is forcing them to pay.

What's unfair about that?

Supply and demand my auld son, nothing else. I merely keep the punter happy that has cash on the hoof. The scum I leave to someone else. It's called being selective.

Call it what you like but the punter has a choice just like I do. I don't force anyone to pick up the scum, nor do I stop anyone from being selective.

Don't tell me you would deny the customer the opportunity to spend his hard earned in the way he sees fit? If he wanted to queue and freeze his nuts of I believe he would do just that. The selective taxi drivers would be out of business.

There we go, I thought you were licensed to apply for hire at the appropriate rate, you think you are there to rip people off, we obviously think different.

Maybe one of the reason PH has gone from 100 to 800 in Edinburgh is that they have worked out there are 365 days in the year, not the odd one or two.

Just a thought.
