Sheffield may go down the re-restricting route as well. After delimit in 2001 the numbers went from 300 to 720 so Sheffield City Council last Wednesday decided to conduct a survey and taxi demand.
The original report by the council solicitor in 2001 had used a formula of some sorts, and reommended that a city with population size of Sheffield needed around 725 cabs. There was a review recommended then and in keeping with that and of course some prompting from the trade association, the Council agreed and even offered to pay for the survey.

The same happened in Edinburgh a number of years ago. The lid came off then went back on. The fact is it won't solve anything. You will be back where you started in a few years. The minute plates start to accrue a false value the problems start. Your trade representatives will be tugging forelock to keep plate numbers down and drivers numbers up. An Edinburgh situation might not be that far away. vested interests and all that.

Skull do you think that trade representatives only represent multi plate owners, or do you think that some are driver associations.

The association I represent for example, has possibly only 3% members who hold more than one plate, 80% are owner drivers and the remaining 17% are drivers (or jocky's).

Each member has only one vote, so the objectives are set by those who drive and own their own cab.

That is a radical point of view, unlikely to fit in with skull, it will therefore be discarded.

Common sence is always disgarded by people like Skull unless it suits their own self interest.

Hmmm, so effectively it would be worth investing in as many cabs before the limit goes back on, speculate to accumulate  You must promiss it will be like Edinburgh though, otherwise I'd be out of pocket

Here in Edinburgh trade representatives only represent false plate values and hiked drivers rentals. Drivers have no say. If a driver speaks out on any controversial issue they face being ostracised by the trade i.e the owners. Drivers out number owners almost 3:1 give or take a few.

The "trade" has no say in anything. The council can do what they want without protest. The big fear for the "owners" is derestriction, this renders any representations made by the trade impotent. It's all about buying into one big lie. There is no 'trade' in Edinburgh only the illusion of ownership, and once you've bought in you need to believe the lie is true.

It's not a bad idea if you can afford it. Just get as many plates on a lot of bangers and run them on a shoestring. If it doesn't work out punt them on. If it does however you'll make a killing.

You talk about self interest. I take it you are one of these little committee men who like to hear the sound of their own voice. This explains the pretence loaded self importance of your posts on this forum.

I bet no one out there loves you as much as you do?

What a bore.

BTW
These guys you claim to represent don't think you are clever, they are just to stupid to realise you are not. Get a life you sad little man. eusasmiles.zip

Everyone who doesn't hate me loves me ................... as you know you can't please all of the people all of the time.

If there is not a drivers association then why hasn't one been formed, it sounds to me that it would be incredibly successful.

I actually hate the sound of my own voice Skull, when I listen to recordings of it I cringe.

I would say though, that of the people who do hate me 95% are multi owners or PH operators.

Skull you only bang on about you.

What have you done or even supported that achieved something positive for your colleagues.

Just as the other non entities on here ....................... its not about anyone other than them.

Think not what your association can do for you but what you can do for your association.

You must be on drugs GA. The only thing you represent is your own ego. This whole trade comes down to guys like you and the ‘council knows best’ mentality? The councillors humour you GA and others like you, and nothing else. They in turn like to have their hangers on. You are being played by both sides. It’s the CC's and Mr T’s of this world who benefit the most. They know the game and how to play it to their advantage. We might find ourselves on different sides of the fence but we all know how the scam works. And what’s more to the point, who is playing who. You on the other hand only want to pat yourself on the back while pretending you have this great relationship with the council. What pish. Guys like you are laughed at GA. Why don’t you wake up and smell the coffee? This is a game of leverage, advantage and objective. No one really cares about the rights and wrongs but when things get out of kilter they have to change. The balance of power swings one way and then the other. You just have to make sure you are on the right side when things turn bad.

Up here in Edinburgh plates are trading for 50K a pop. How long can it last? My bet is not for much longer. But yet, the GA’s of Edinburgh are still up there begging for it to continue while turning a blind eye to the loss of their market share. They are still telling people to gamble everything on ‘buying a pup’ despite knowing it cannot last. Makes you wonder why eh?

BTW all them claim to represent the trade....

I have told you that the people I was elected unanimously to represent come from all aspects of the trade. The majority, by some margin, are owner drivers and it is their opinions we are mandated to propose.

I don't post any of what we have achieved in Gateshead so your claims I seek any sort of gratification are ill founded.

You have absolutely no idea what is happening here .............. your assumptions are based on what happens in your area and you consider that it must happen everywhere else.

The people who prosper the most in the taxi trade in Gateshead used to be the PH operators but as you quite rightly state the balance of power is likely to shift, and it is shifting, more increasingly, to the HC owner driver.
