Will anyone out there (in Glasgow) please answer me the $64,000 question? What are the average (gross) earnings per hour in a Hackney vs a Private Hire Car in Glasgow?
I am presently a Private Hire driver and am seriously considering moving to Hacks. I have the funds. I presently make circa £12 to £13 an hour / £1000 per week (gross) if I work between 75 to 80 hours in my trusty Skoda working noon to around midnight.
I do of course fully understand that there an immense number of variables involved in arriving at an "average" figure, but I would really appreciate some idea of potentially greater gross earnings if I was driving a hack.
Thanks for all replies.

Historically, it's generally been accepted that in most cases HC drivers make more than PH drivers ,although of course there are exceptions.

I would say now though that in places where the black hacks have been deregulated the PH drivers are making more. HC drivers are finding themselves sitting on the ranks a lot longer between jobs.

Just take a look in towns where dereg. has occurred - how many blacks are now working the radio as well as the streets. At one time there were very few blacks on the radio circuits. This may again be different in some areas, but it's certainly true in some towns.

My honest advice would be to stick with the Skoda and the PH circuit.

I'm sure there will be people who disagree... to me though, that would seem the safest option.

What a deafening silence! I can only reasonably conclude that Glasgow hackney owners pay circa £35k for a plate simply because of their personal preference for a black-coloured plate rather than the yellow one for private hire!
Obviously there are no differences in potential earnings between hackney and private hire in Glasgow ...its er...all down to the colour of the plates!

it's a fact job 4 job a hack will earn more then a p/h . But a hack will not do as many jobs a day as a p/h. the public will always consider a hack more expensive than a p/h . but as a p/h driver 4 15yrs my self id sooner me busey for a bit less money than sat on a rank reading the same paper 34 times a day.............   so if i was u i'd stay were i was mate.

Not many black cab drivers want to drive minicabs.

Most minicab drivers want to driver black cabs.

Does that answer your question? :D

I'm quite sure Mr Adams is looking forward to a joint LPH/taxi license. Maybe even giving LPH grandfather rights.

I don't know about driving a black cab but outside of London there are more saloon hackneys in existence than there are purpose built vehicles, which include as you put it, "black cabs".

In the 70% of unrestricted authorities there are more Saloon Taxi drivers, than there are private hire drivers so I suppose that rather than emphasise black cab drivers it might be wiser to just say Hackney carriage drivers.

Are you just making stuff up now JD because I know of many areas, including my own, where the numbers of PH vehicles is greater than the total number of HC and WAVs outnumber saloon HC's.

Am I making things up? lol I don't know, you tell me? You have two choices a right one and a wrong one. I think I can guess which one you will choose, as usual.

The key word there is Warrington.

Ian and myself are Licensed London taxi drivers.
We can do their job, they can't do ours.
