This may apply to individual drivers but it does not apply to all drivers concurrently when plate numbers are limited by the council.

Reply from T.: Not all drivers want the hassle of being an owner, they are content to be labour only sub contractors, let someone else do the paperwork, maintenace etc.
Why are there so many PH and minicabs in unrestricted areas then, if plates are as freely available as claimed.

1. Yes, but to be fair you should give everyone the same chance to hold a HC plate if they want.
2.Because many PH drivers do not want to sit on ranks or run back to them all the time and enjoy the variety of work offered under PH. But it's their own choice not one imposed by artificial limits :)

Reply from T. In reality the new plates all flock to the town centres, they go to where they have the best chance of a job, (to be expected), the outer areas lose out. Like the village shop, post office, garage etc all closed down because the large outlets have drawn away thier trade, then you get a Tesco Express directly opposite a Sainsburys Conveniece and only half a mile from a Waitrose, Lidal and Tesco supermarket. The town centres falling over outlets and the rural areas nothing. Taxis are going the same way plenty in town centres, nothing 2 miles out.

Where is "Luke" has he been put back in the toy box ?
Can we have a glove-puppet next ?

Bob-BOB little weed, Do you remember the flowerpot men, you should cause they talked a lot of gibberish and funny nonsense just like you, perhaps they all retired to Sussex and became PH drivers. Was it Bill or was it Ben forgot to buy a Plate back then.
Remember children not all PH drivers are miserable nasty b*st*rds, only the ones who pine for plates. Bye Bye

Reply: Why are there some many "minicabs" or PH's in delimited areas, surley every driver would be in a taxi? Why would anyone bother with PH if the advantages of a taxi were freely available ?

Answ: Because numbers are limited by other means, restricted vehicles, complex knowlege tests, etc etc. When I can walk into any Council office in any part of the country and get a Hackney Plate I will beleive what you say until then its just the haves Vs the have nots. You want dereg on plates why not on vehicle types, fares, boundaries everything ! I dont hear you calling for a freemarket.

Well please tell Mr 187ums that then.

However, you are correct about quality control deterring some from entering the taxi market, but this varies thoughout the country and doesn't affect the premise of my argument, which was that restricted numbers excludes drivers from their preferred method of operation.

The quality control aspect that divides the trade is another issue.

Except of course our buddy T. who got his for nothing, but of course it now suits his interests to ensure that others "need the funds" to become an owner - ie fund that are transferred from the prospective owner into T.'s pocket

He buys into a going concern business, you just want something for nothing because you lack the guts to back your ability to run a business.

What nonsense - so you're saying that someone running a PH car doesn't have the business acumen to 'run a business' aka taxi? Could you explain the difference, please?

As for 'going concern', I think that from a business point of view that's a very dubious assumption given that the main thing bought into can be a plate premium which depends wholly on the political and regulatory environment.

A bit like the goodwill argument - sounds good to the uninitiated, but on closer inspection it's found wanting.

Reply from T.: so you are happy to restrict numbers by other means.
Why not Tachos and a 38 hour week, limited overtime, compulsary periods away from the wheel, like most professional drivers. That will keep a few out. Drive a taxi for 10 hours through the night jump into a 50+ seater coach do a school run in the morning. Round of golf, 2 hours in the bookies, return school run, 2 hours kip then back for pub rush, better make it 9 holes on the golf course dont want to fall asleep at the wheel of the golf cart and overun the green, members would be appalled. Yes I like the 38 hour life style bring on the the Tachos, EU working policy et al.

Rply from T.: Nope I was happily working way for someone else, I had ambitions to own my own taxi but not having one did not make me miserable. I have always enjoyed this job, I was grateful to the owner that gave me a job and provided me with a means to earn an income and learn the trade so that when I did get my plate I was a good cabbie. It was a natural progression like an aprenticeship. No the taxi trade has made me very happy.

I've always said that if you can't run a vehicle then you shouldn't be driving one, thus any one granted a badge should be allowed to run a vehicle from day one. :D
