PIPING UP TO CATCH A BARI TAXI

I'VE just about recovered from my trip to Bari last week. As usual, the Tartan Army were in better form than the team - but losing to the world champs on their own turf is no great shame.

The great shame was the lack of public transport at the stadium after the game.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of Scots supporters were left stranded in the cold.

We joined a melee for a rare passing taxi and the driver explained he could only take five people.

Not letting on that our party was six, we asked if he could open the boot for Spud the Piper's bagpipes - and he duly obliged.

In went the pipes, quickly followed by the squealing piper who we bundled in against his will.

The taxi took off with five of us inside all feeling quite pleased at our ingenuity.

Halfway towards town, there was a wail . . . then the first chords of Flower of Scotland.

Spud had fired up his pipes in the boot!

The stunned driver looked in his mirror - only to see five of us holding our hands up.

"It's . . er . . . no us, mister," we pleaded. "Your are six! You are six!" he shouted . . . but then started laughing.

When Spud was finally freed he played the driver a tune and we chipped in with a decent tip. Grazi Bari. You looked after us well.

According to Ceefax page 404 St Andrews is the warmest place in the country just now at 20C as compared to some at 9-11C in southern England.

Makes a nice change though, but I think just a few nights ago we were the coldest in the country

Another thing that made I laugh is an advert for plumber's training in a taxi magazine.

Along the lines of you can earn more cash during the day as a plumber, than as a cab driver at night.

Bet the plate barons love that one being in a taxi trade mag.
