Drunken man struggled with police

An 18-year-old Newquay man had to be restrained by 10 police officers, three ambulance crew and hospital staff while being arrested for damaging a taxi in Bristol, magistrates in Liskeard heard.

Gary Lee Cooper, of Lanhenvor Avenue, admitted causing criminal damage to a taxi and using threatening words and behaviour in Bristol on November 24 last year.

He also pleaded guilty to allowing himself to be carried in a car knowing it to be stolen and was sentenced to 90 days in prison, suspended for 12 months. He was also ordered to take part in the Think First programme and pay £150 compensation for the damage.

Maurice Champion, prosecuting, said Cooper had damaged a taxi after it had delivered him to Bristol Temple Mead station. Cooper had been very drunk at the time and had to be held up by police officers during his arrest. He then became aggressive and threatening and a decision was made that he needed hospital treatment.

Because of his behaviour the ambulance crew insisted he be fitted with leg and wrist restraints. He continued to struggle and police, ambulance crew and hospital staff were needed to control him.

While on bail for the Bristol offences on March 22, said Mr Champion, he was found to be the front seat passenger in a stolen Ford Fiesta stopped by police on the A30.

Michael Gregson, defending, said the offences in Bristol took place while he was very drunk, but he had no previous convictions for offences of violence. The threatening behaviour had taken place while he was strapped down on a hospital trolley.

I wonder if he's named after a movie star, a pair of jeans, or both :)
