HEADLINE: Training award for local cabbies

Hull Taxi and Private Hire drivers are the first in Yorkshire to take part in a groundbreaking training initiative leading to a BTEC Level 2 Award in transporting passengers by taxi and private hire vehicles.

The Hull College training course has been welcomed by taxi drivers in Hull, keen to make sure they present a professional image to the fare-paying public.

The aim of the two-week course was to affirm and improve the skills of drivers in the passenger transport industry. The course is made up of seven units covering all areas including customer service, disability awareness, equal opportunities and safety. The scheme has had a 100 per cent pass rate thanks to the enthusiasm of the participants and trainers.

Councillor Andrew Percy, chair of Hull City Council's licensing committee, said: "I am encouraged by the enthusiasm shown by drivers and the training builds on their existing skills and improves the quality of the visitor experience for residents, businesses and visitors."

George Smith, Hackney Carriage driver, added: "The course was very relevant and informative; I was able to draw on my experience to good effect throughout the course. I would recommend the course to all taxi drivers."

Without any question or doubt the future of our industry is dependant on adequate training to the highest possible standard.

Here in Gateshead we are ensuring that access to training is afforded to people in a variety of ways to suit everyone ................... and it will involve greater information than standard courses currently being offered.

Further news to follow ..................... anyone in the North East who's interested should PM me with contact details where further information will be sent when available.

Wow, a 100% pass rate, in Hull too. Do you get a certificate?

Could well be one of these courses where you turn up, sit through a few days and then get a certificate regardless of merit.

Its not really beneficial to do that Dusty .................... but to be honest it probably explains why they have been set up so quickly.

Such training should be more about informing people and tests should be set at a level which is easily attainable but not easy.

The VRQ Btec level 2 is what is being offered and it really is, or should be like ABC to any existing driver so I'm not surprised at the 100% success rate.

We are doing something a bit different up here and when things are finalised and put in place an announcement will be made.
