People are trying to cross thread this post to suit their own purposes - this was a thread about WAV and disabled right?

In my humble opinion this is a no win sitution; like most my cab doubles as the family car; well if this all goes ahead mine can't! Because my own child CAN NOT physically get into my WAV due to his disability! Now why can't he claim discrimination? Errm yes he can! He can get in to a saloon car with no problems - and this legislation is stating that all Taxi's on the rank will have to WAV to ensure that the disabled are not prejudiced against; which I agree with; but this will mean my son will not be able to get in any cab on any rank if this goes ahead so thats descrimination! There is no arguement in my opinion - LO's need to ensure that their is a fair mix in relation to clients for WAV / saloons etc to ensure that all passengers are able to travel in a Taxi that they are comfortable in!

And if you are lucky enough to stil be able to drive a saloon stand up for your rights for the sake of the people that can't get in E7 / TX2 or 4 / Voyager whatevers!

Yes Trevor is still about....TDO...
In answer to your question there is nothing simple about ranks, wheelchair accessible vehicles, or saloon,....... or the interfacing of policies... each city/ and town are different....... space for ranks is one of the governing factors...... policies such as planning permission at the start of a development is crucial..... safety barriers is crucial...... so it all depends on where a council is at/ worked way through the problems.......

in my part of Sefton which is very close to Liverpool, and remember that Liverpool is all WAC........ we operate all WAC vehicles because the public would not flag down a saloon vehicle.... in fact people that purchased E7s did not get flagged down for a number of Years and are now only being recognised by the public as Taxi after using them from the rank......

The main ranks we have in my part of Sefton, consist of the main rank with a safety barrier running the full length so the public have to queue to get into the first vehicle if he cannot load passenger/ pram, then he has no alternative but to leave the rank and go to the back, the trade worked with the council for the implementation of the ranks they wanted and how they should work, unlike many areas we have many ranks, and new ranks are being implement each year, in the positions the trade wants them and needs them, safety barriers are extremely useful,

on the other side of Sefton Southport are starting to catch up, now their lives another story in itself,

As a finish, a main rank will probably hold 10 to 12 cabs, and further back but still within sight will be a feeder rank which could hold 4 to 12 cabs and then further back again will be another rank ... leaving room for bus stops and loading bays integrated in the traffic policy. the cost of ranks can be met at development stage by the developer or highways, and does not necessarily have to come from the Taxi budget.

I think you will find that all national associations and unions are strongly arguing that there needs to be a mixture of vehicles in any district to meet the needs of the disabled, but the main problem facing certain councils is that in some areas their Hackney's are all saloon and the problem they face is how to bring WAV',on

But anyway, back to on line petitions to TB/GB. The last time I looked, 29 people had signed this petition.

Methinks Mr Jimbo you have hit the nail on the head.

Just say that petition managed to get 500 folks signing it. Litlle chance but I'm in a generous mood.

The gov have a look, work out that there are 120,000 odd taxi drivers in the UK and then pi** themselves laughing.

Have they worked out a way of deciding which of their members pay up to 35 grand for a motor, and which ones pay up to 10 grand?

Mind you, they could always change the law, and give councils the power to change the conditions on certain popular ranks, and make them wheelchair accessible vehicles only.... I believe someone on the site is responsible for the idea being submtted at present....

The plates in Sefton are all interchangeable, if you think there's more work for a saloon vehicle you put it on one , if you think you will make more with a WAV it goes on that.....it seems to work. :-o

Well there can't be many people in the country who plate TXs when they could be plating saloons.

Eurobuses, Caravelles, Doblos maybe, but not TXs. :-k

why ... it's no use having a saloon if nobody will get in.

Must be a strange lot up there then I drive the ONLY wav in my town and passengers walk by it and go straight to the saloon cars. The thing is it has now done 350000 miles and needs replacing BUT 4 years ago when i bought it there were about 50 taxis in town now there are over 80 We have price wars going on and i have to work at least 20% longer hours to earn the same money as I took 4 years ago. There is NO economic sense in spending £25 to £30K replacing it when everyone else can spend £2 to £3 K on saloon cars or MPV's it is not a level playing field

Can't force taxi owners to buy more exoensive vehicles and all the accessories. Also conveying disabled brings more liability. ie: Extra strength Ramp on E7 collapsed within 6 months with person on motorised wheelchair. Also all the attachements have been designed bt ables people. And don't work.

Noticed many owners of TX and wheelchair taxis now changing to saloons. Can't make people lay out £10-15000 more for the same fare.
Plus the extra liability.

good idea. now where's the money? Oh!! It comes from my money? That's a good idea.

Who can't force taxi owners to buy more expensive vehicles Junie?

Your Council? I think you will find that they can.

Not so sure with the big firms. But the single independent TX and E7 owners have got rid of theirs and bought saloons and estates. There was a big hoohaa about liability and gauranteeing safety for wheelchair users. Because the taxi owners said (Sucking in of breath like a car mechanic) thye could not guarantee safe passage because of the portended difficulties many stopped taking wheelchairs. "Wouldn't like anything to happen Mr Councillor"

Just knew I had a hell of a lot of extra work as an E7 drivers. and owners going to saloons and estates rather than risk an expensive law suit if anything happens and a wheelchair tips. The fact of pushing 30 stone up a ramp in a 1-10 gradient is neither here nor there.

Complete mess as usual by those who have not thougth further forward than their nose.

The response will be different in each town and council.

I live in hastings, there's no hope for an intelligent outcome

Junie

And if your Council made it a condition of License that all Hackney Carriages shall be wheelchair accessible?

(As in Lincoln, London, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham, etc, etc.....

I know that is going on. and has been suggested here. Despite little old ladies under 5' with arthritis saying they don't like the big cabs. Also arguements against the E7 even though disabled liked them because of the space. and arguements against sliding doors. Better in high winds on Hastings sea front. Hence owners changing vehicles to argue the case. Just watching what happens. Why cab't councils listen to intelligecne from those who know instead it gets in entrenched positions and arguements get lost in point scoring and tactics?
