Receieved this e-mail the other day which is self-explanatory.

Alex

TDO I received this reply from the green party, with regards the turning circle and London's taxi drivers having to buy expensive replacement cabs just to meet the Mayors emission strategy, due to nearly all the engine modifications that don't work, and that there are other cabs that more than meet or exceed the mayors expected standards.

Subject: Taxis and Mayor

Many thanks for your email. We have raised the issue of the turning circle with the Mayor and we will continue to raise questions concerning the evidence supporting its continuation. We agree that the turning circle is important, but not at the expense of holding back action on major priorities like climate change.

The quicker the turning circle is dumped the quicker cab owners can change to a cheaper more environmentally friendly cab.

I think the issue isn't ness the banning of the u-turn, but the un-banning of alternatives.

My own thoughts on the u-turn is that it's a danger, as any road safety mush would confirm.

I think it's more about politics and vested interests, but given that green issues are increasingly dominating the agenda then the turning circle may become less of a priority in the future.

Climate change is a natural phenomena.

Climate change is an excuse for greater taxation.

WE can do nothing about it ....................... more pollutants were put into the atmosphere during the 50's and 60's ................ a time when people suggested we had 4 seasons.

Anything would be better than a cab with made in China stamped on the bottom

On a serious note its about time LTI's strangle hold was lifted from London and anywhere else they have a grip, as the streets are that clogged up its almost imposable to do a u turn

Strange that because every euro owner I know would gladly have his turning circle back.

Surely it's only as dangerous as the idiot driving the cab.

I'd rather swing around in 1 swift manouver than struggle doing 3 point turns like euro and ph drivers have to.

Surely the 3 point turn is far more dangerous, no?

Well in a way you're correct, but a few years ago the Transport Research Laboratory made the point that it encouraged drivers to turn in inapproprite places, whereas if they didn't have the facility then they would drive on to a safer spot.

So it's not just a case of single-point turn vs. three-point turn, it's arguably single-point turn vs. safer option. :-k

But you probably know as well as I do that both taxi's and ph will turn where they are nearest to where they want to be, whether that's driving a purpose built, a euro or a saloon.

Well maybe all do the same in certain situations but as I'm quite sure you know in more marginal situations all drivers won't do the same, and some drivers will try a dangerous three-pointer when others would go up the road a bit to a roundabout or whatever.

So I suppose the TRL were making the point that a PB taxi may be encouraged to turn in a difficult place whereas the saloon driver may travel up the road to the roundabout.

I'll give you the saloon but every euro down here attempts to turn around in exactly the same places they'd have done it in a PB.

On several of our ranks they have to swing out into the traffic just to go around them.

I really don't have a problem with people doing what they have to do to spin around but I love my turning circle, what can I say, I've been spoiled. LMAO. (it's the only decent feature on a PB)

Well TBH I don't really know because unlike the TRL I haven't done any scientific research and I can't remember the details of the report and indeed the tight turning circle looks prima facie attractive.

However, I would imagine that in the scenario you describe the E7 owners will probably feel under pressure to turn in the same way as the TX drivers, while if they were away from the ranks or whatever then they may be more inclined not to do the turn.

Diablo?    Passengers would rather be seen climbing out of the back of a sheep than climbing out of the back of a "Diablo" (is that short for Diabolical?

As for the "Green"   E7 why do local owners hammer them down the bypass, fill 'em up with additives to clean the emmissions up pre council test?

I think most diesel owners give there cabs a good blast, before the test, but i think you have to top up with some special cleaning fluid from peugeot with the E7 like you have to with the 307, it can cost a small fortune
