Doug Holliday - MBE forservices to transport
A COUNCIL officer from Battyeford has been awarded an MBE in the Queen's birthday honours list.
Doug Holliday, of River View, licensing manager for Kirklees, was given the honour for services to transport.
After attending Mirfield's former Marlborough School, Mr Holliday spent 10 years in engineering in the private sector before going to work in the mayor's office at Batley Borough Council where his father was the mayor's chauffeur.
In 1974 he was appointed taxi licensing officer, a new role which came about with the influx of taxi companies to the town following the rise in popularity of the Batley Variety Club.
He was made licensing manager for Kirklees in 1991 and was at the forefront of forming the National Association of Licensing Enforcement Officers (NALEO), becoming its deputy chairman and then chairman for the north east region.
A member of the body's national committee, Mr Holliday worked closely with the Department of Transport on the provision of taxis for the disabled and Go Skills, a scheme for the training of taxi drivers, and was one of a handful of people offered honorary membership.
Mr Holliday was also responsible for setting up a voucher scheme to subsidise taxi travel for disabled people and has increased the number of disabled hackney carriages.
He has commissioned videos to help with driver training, used nationally in promoting public and personal safety, roles in crime reporting, and communicating effectively with the public.
On hearing of his MBE, Mr Holliday said: "I think it's a wonderful thing to receive. I'm very touched. I'll be retiring this year so it's a lovely end to my career.
"I was quite overcome and it's taken some getting to grips with. I've enjoyed tremendously working for Kirklees. I am looking forward to going down to London and hopefully to meet the Queen."
And Mr Holliday has more than one reason to celebrate as he recently became a grandfather for the first time.
His daughter Louise, who has followed in her father's footsteps as a transport officer for Leeds City Council, gave birth to baby Poppy in April.
Mr Holliday also has a son Paul, an account manager for a printing company.
He is married to Mary, who also works for Kirklees in social services and the couple enjoy sailing, caravanning, walking and cruises.
