How can the council allow a plate-holder to keep his plate when someone else buys the motor?

No wonder the 'powers that be' are having a re-think.

yes in theory, but the Council make sure that the person hiring the plate [using his own motor] is made to have the motor docs registered in the plate owners name, Council ruling, its to prevent a Hull situation from days gone by


i think some drivers don't even pay that much, maybe wrong, depending on the nature of the owner, some pay a lot less than 200 for the hire
some drivers know it a cheaper option that having all the overheads, and some just don't want that, just a drive and then go home with no worries of breakdown, repairs, insurance and road tax

i don't think 200 a week isn't far out considering what i pay out every month

think the higher week charges are more likely to be when the vehicle is a Station taxi or has a railway permit

If you did that up here then you'd be accused of hiding the true facts.

Interesting situation in York and under normal circumstances plate values would decrease so I wonder what the plate value is now? Should proprietors consider selling to someone who is willing to take a chance on the council not removing restrictions or should they take that chance themselves and risk sixty grand or perhaps slightly less.

My personal opinion is that York council are deadly serious and I certainly wouldn't gamble sixty grand on what is no more than a fifty fifty decision at best.

The tell tale signs of deregulation are quite obvious because they have consulted the trade and they are now consulting the public and other so called stake holders. This will ensure the legality of the decision and will thwart any legal action if they do decide to deregulate. It would be wise for those hackney carriage owners working in York to take these warning signs on board because once a decision is made there will be no turning back.

The council don't check that Pete I rent just the plate and my vehicle is registered in my name and my name only.

I signed a bit of paper that the plate owner has saying the car was theirs which my other half was not happy about at the time but when all is said and done the car is registered in my name I pay the insurance and I maintain the car not the plate owner. Plus half the car belongs to my other half so I would like to see the plate owner try and take possession

Plus everybody knows why the plate rents are so high, hope I don't upset anyone but ITS THE TURKS!!!! every plate coming up to rent is snapped up by them it doesn't take a genius to work out why the rents have risen so much.

Who is exploiting them? here is one situation I know of,Mr A rents a plate for £200 a week and puts it on his own car which he drives during the day, he then rents the car out to a night driver for £220 a week the night driver has no running expenses apart from his fuel, so he is happy, the guy on days is happy and so is the plate owner, so three people are employed and happy where is the problem.

If deregulated, Mr A could have his own plate and not have to pay £200 p.w. to someone doing f*ck all for the money.

All this is very interesting I must admit but does anyone know what the average track rental is, for a day track, a night track, and a through track? And can anyone advise me what the average plate rental is?

I must remind everyone that not disclosing a third party interest in a licensed hackney carriage vehicle is an offence. It is no wonder that someone renting a plate requires any vehicle licensed as a hackney carriage to be in their name. Sections 40, 41, 42 and 44 of the 1847 act are quite explicit.

You can correct me if I'm wrong but don't York council require to see documentation of a bill of sale for the vehicle in the owners name when first licensed? Having said that I also understand that York allows the insurance cover and registration document to be in the drivers name and not the owners. Any proprietor who fails to disclose the keeper of the vehicle in his license application is guilty of an offence. Proprietors who have so far got away with renting plates for so long can count themselves very lucky indeed.

I don't have any position on renting plates just the fact thats its illegal not to disclose any third party interest in a hackney carriage.

Reminds me of a certain someone on here who blames plate premiums on the buyer, not the seller.

So if someone is selling bottled water at well over the odds in Tewkesbury then this person would blame the flood victims, not the spiv exploiting them
