Put these date in your diary. June 24th 25th. Thats when Mr Shamin Raja appeals to the crown court against his conviction for displaying an illuminated roof sign on the streets of Manchester.

Chit I hate replying to my own posts but I have to correct a few facts.

The case in Question is in the Magistrates court on the 24th 25th June. It is an appeal in the name of Mr Shamin Raja agaisnt Manchester City Councils decision on the 24th november 2003 to ammend certain licensing conditions including the removal of roof signs. As previously stated Mr Raja is the front man for the PHOA.

Appearing in court as witnesses for the council will be the Manchester TODA chairman GS and PC of the GMBU.

This is a new appeal against the coucnil decision on 24th nov 2003 and has nothing to do with the previous case, which as I understand was finally dealt with in the high court on Jan 17th 2004.

Mr. Raja dropped the said appeal over illuminated roof signs with costs being awarded to Manchester council.

Here are the minutes of the meeting on 24th November so as not to confuse anyone.

Licensing and Appeals Committee
24 November 2003

Acting under Delegated Authority

Present:
Councillor Andrews - In the Chair
Councillors Ashley, Burns, Donaldson, Evans, Fry, Lyons, O'Callaghan, Reid and Ukairo.

Decision.

LAP/03/80 Conditions for private hire vehicles

Members received a report concerning requests for amendments to the conditions of private hire vehicles in respect of:

1. The colour of vehicles
2. The use of roof signs
3. The identification stickers to be affixed to the vehicle

Members of the Manchester Private Hire Operators Association, their legal representative and representatives of the hackney carriage trade attended the meeting and made representations.

Decision

1. That the colour of vehicles will be white or silver.

2. That roof signs remain prohibited. The Committee said that they had reviewed the arguments for prohibition and considered the representations made to them for the re-introduction of the roof signs but remained of the view that the reason for prohibition were valid and took precedence.

3. To retain the existing stickers on the bonnet and rear window. To replace the signs on the front nearside and offside wings with stickers on the front doors as suggested by the Manchester Private Hire Operators Association. To replace the stickers on the inside top corner of each of the 3 passenger windows with a small triangular shaped sticker on the front windscreen concerning insurance again as suggested by the Manchester Private Hire Operators Association.

Mid Sussex council have never had such a case Sussex! Can you be more specific?

Oh dear, old Sussex gets it wrong.

The info I got was via NATPHLEO, and my LO.

I did query the fact that Tonbridge is in Kent, and Mid Sussex is I believe somewhere in the middle of Sussex. But that's what I was told.

It might be worth asking NATPHLEO, although they are pretty useless in giving out any proper info, in my opinion.

lol sussex you made an Authoritive statement that you knew of a case that went to the appeal court. Are you now saying you know of no such case? Or are you saying you know of a case but you don't know where it took place?

Can we take it that you have now withdrawn the claim that Mid Sussex ever had such a case and that the information you supplied was incorrect? For whatever reason.

Best wishes

:D

I think the rooflight case was in Plymouth, cos the city is full of PH with big roof signs.

Do you have one Steveo?

lol Tom I was pulling Sussex leg I just wanted to see how accurate he was. The head of licensing in Mid sussex Mr leigh told me this morning that there may well have been a case but it was long before he became licensing officer.

The cab boys down there can't recollect such a case but that doesn't mean there wasn't one. But full marks to sussex he thought he got it wrong when actually he may not have done lol

Best wishes

Wot old Sussex might be right, hurrah hurrah. :D :D

It was definitely an appeal from the Mags Court, to the Crown Court.

I have asked my source if he can tell me the details again, cos if nothing else, there is now money involved.

And it's mine.

There was a case in Brighton about ph roof lights and to my knowledge, if I can remember correctly, about 15 to 17 years ago.

Thank you for that info Scanner. I was informed today that the roof signs in Mid Sussex can only be illuminated when the drivers are outside the place of pick up. The rest of the time they have to be turned off. I wonder if anywhere else operates that system?

Best wishes

Further info on that can be obtained from Mr Peter Winder, HCO Brighton & Hove 01273 292290.

In Brighton the ph roof signs are connected via the meter just like the hacks. Not hired they are on, hired they are off. which I have always found strange and have mentioned this on more than one occasion to the HCO. If anything this should be the other way round.

Scanner,
no thats the right way round in your manor the only difference between private hire and taxis are the premiums on the taxi plates.

the taxis are also status symbols, I believe the taxi firms can also test thier own drivers on behalf of the council?

jesus why you had a day of action today is anybodys guess, how you equate running the council and running disputes is anybodys buisness.

Stupid person. I really dont know why I bother with this. Any oportunity to slag someone off and it is jumped on.

I can really see that this forum is so PH orientated. I havent posted for a while.....just popped in and out to see what I can learn. But I can confirm without any shadow of doubt that this is definately the last post by me on here. Well done.. you have achieved what you wanted...whoever you are.

I have just had it confirmed that I was half right, not half wrong, but half right.

It was Mid Sussex, but it was at Lewes Crown Court. But it was about 7/8 years ago.

Doesn't time fly?
