here in sunny retford (north notts) none of the hackney drivers actually take any notice of the metered fares, for example, if the meter says 5.20 they will charge 4.00,
is this the same in other areas or is it just our area that has mind less idiots driving cabs

Yes I constantly feel the need to charge less than I should, I guess it must be the samaritan within, trying to break free?

I took the wife to a restaurant in Retford recently, and the bill came to £52:00. Rather strangely, the Waitress didn't say "give us £40 for cash"

Still, could make good headlines in the local press. "Cabbie tips punters"

Well before JD come in and states what he has time and time before, I would like to remind you that the tariff sheet should read or have on it that the fare is the maximum that can be charged.

Your free to charge anything below that   as long as the meter is on from A to B within your area.

This is true.
However its a dangerous road to be going down. Followed to its natural conclusion, you would have every job going to the lowest bidder and all of us going broke

That's a few portions of KFC there Jimbo.

I think a lot of it depends on how big the City/Town/village is that you live in. The smaller it is, the tighter the trade, and drivers are willing to cut each others throats.

In Cardiff I have heard of extremes either way High/Low charges, but when they get in mine and it is within the bounderies, it is what is on the meter, or get another cab.

I think what Mr Fosher means is that there's fair discounting going on.

Hardly unique to his area, but he portrays it in a rather misleading manner methinks.

It's not like someone buying a car displayed at £10k and the salesman says give me £8k (as Mr Fosher portrays it) it's probably more like the car is displayed £10k and the buyer offers £8k, or the taxis market themselves as 20% off.

Yes, but restaurants set their own prices and charge accordingly, so in a way your analogy supports what the drivers are doing in Retford.

I doubt it - drivers generally discount so they can make more money by having more jobs. They're not doing it for charitable purposes.

In the grand scheme of things, if everyone discounted every job there would just be less taxis and those remaining would have more work to make up for the lower fares.
