Taxi driver five times over limit

A taxi driver who ferried passengers while he was nearly five times over the drink limit has been placed on probation for 18 months. Perth Sheriff Court heard Trevor Deeks was so intoxicated that police had to help hold him up when he got out of the driver's seat.

The 45-year-old, from Perth, admitted drink-driving in Scone on 27 January. Deeks was banned for three years after a sheriff heard he was taking steps to tackle a serious alcohol problem. He was also ordered to undergo alcohol counselling and attend a drink-driving course.

Sheriff Robert McCreadie told Deeks the public interest was best served by placing him on probation. Perth Sheriff Court heard Deeks had managed to do at least two runs and was on his way to pick up a third fare when he was intercepted by police. He was reported by terrified customers who had called 999.

Deeks, who was operating as a freelance driver for Radio Taxis in Perth, has not returned to work since being caught. His defence said he now accepted he had an alcohol problem, which was linked to the breakdown of his marriage.

Sheriff McCreadie said: "I am concerned by the amount of alcohol he had in his system. "I expect you can understand my concern from the point of view of public protection. It is a very high level of alcohol. "Given the level of the reading the central issue is how to deal with the serious alcohol problem he has."

Deeks, who was also reported to the taxi licensing board, said: "It is just things I am going through at the moment. I have got no excuse."

Wont he have to produce a driving licence before he gets to drive it away? Avis would insist on that and any limo company would be foolish not to.

Fancy that, they have courses to teach you drink driving in Scotland. How very helpful.

We don't wish to hide our dirty linen. We support the law of the land and don't go out loop-hole hunting. [-X
