Cabbie: I saw moped gang put cyclist in a coma

BYLINE: PAUL CHESTON

A TAXI driver told today how robbers on mopeds left a cyclist unconscious and covered in blood when they knocked her off her bike.

Jane Gauntlett, 25, suffered brain damage and was in a coma for two weeks after the robbery in February, Inner London Crown Court heard.

A 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, denies being part of the gang. He is alleged to have ridden a stolen moped in front of Miss Gauntlett's bike, boxing her in, as a passenger on another stolen scooter snatched her handbag.

Taxi driver Mark Alexander said he was in Harrow Road when he saw the incident. "She was lying on the road. I thought, 'this does not look good'. I could see blood on her head." He said he chased the gang but lost them at a red light and returned to the scene. The youth accused of the attack described it as "disgraceful" but said he had nothing to do with it as he was in front of his friends.

"I looked behind to see them on the moped right next to a woman on a pedal bike. I just saw both bikes wobble. I turned around and carried on driving." The trial continues.

Mark stopped and waited with the victim until the ambulance arrived.
For the story to say he continued to drive is tosh.
