with York council saying we have to have hacks in black by 2009, as it will become difficult to find a vehicle of choice with the specs you want and the right colour, could it be possible to have the vehicle wrapped in plastic, lets say the v5 says vehicle is [example] "red" in colour

after the vehicle is wrapped in black would the v5 have to be changed or not, and would a Council acccept this

any thoughts

It would probably be cheaper to have it painted.

A wrap is "temporary" and would not change a v5.

It is also more expensive than you may think, and could become tatty quicker than you would expect, and would be fairly likely to take the paint with it when it is removed.

Is a black vehicle that hard to find in York?

I asked about this and the council wanted to see one so I went to three different firms in York the price for wrapping an average saloon varied from £1800 down to £900 was the cheapest, there are more black cars than ever now being turned off the production lines and by 2009 when we have to have them there will be plenty to go for.

I think all that plastic wrapping lark is a waste of time for the taxi/PH trade.

Every time you have a dink, or a donk, you will have to have the whole lot re-wrapped.

Stinky instead of trying to wrap the cabs or even paint them get the boys together and take the council to court as it is a unreasonable request made by the council.
Fight it all the way

The taxi association took legal advice and were told that as an association they could not fight it but an individual could, when given all the facts the lawyer concerned said he did not think it could be won as every local authority in the area had a colour code, and the only distinguishing feature on York hackneys was a plate on the back, his words were " if you take this on you will only be funding some lawyers Carribean cruise as I do not think you can win it" therefore it was thought that to seek advice and then not heed it was not a good idea.

What a load of balls, you as an association or an individual can bring an injunction against the council.
I hope JD reads this and he will comment more and point you in the right direction, start fighting it now.
Are any of you in the GMB or any other union if so ask them to help also.

There have been several failed attempts at introducing a single colour to both hackney and P/h vehicles here are one or two.

Durham

http://taxi-driver.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2902

Hastings

http://taxi-driver.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4049

And you also have the Stockport case.

The reason that both these cases failed was the colour of the vehicle, white is being gradually fazed out and the judge said in the Durham case it was unreasonable to expect people to find a white car just so they were identifieable as durham cabs as hackneys already had the side plates displaying the city crest, there were 53,000 more black cars produced last year and 43,000 less silver ones, white ones are virtually impossible, that is why York want black.

so the thinker, just imagine you have just bought a new red
saloon for your taxi, you spent ages deciding what colour and speck to get, you may have even taken her indoors with you so the colour does not clash with her outfit,
you are working away nicely for a few months and out of the blue some d#ck head from the council sends you a letter saying you must either change it or re paint it black, would you just take it lying down or would you fight it.
And as for your statement about there being more black cars registered, most are for the 2 door small engine segment

The council may want black but the drivers dont

Seat, Punto, Focus, Astra seem to be abundant in black, lately i have seen some of these vehicles come in on PH, for goodness sake, a Punto, pulling its ar*se out with 4 20 stone blokes in it as passengers

the Council have said to one driver disputing what going to happen was told they are not interested in quality vehicles going on as Taxis, as long as they are 4 years old, in black and pass the Euro standards they want

so every taxi driver is going to be "strapped", the ones who can't get credit or raise cash will be out, credit/ money lending is now starting to get harder to obtain, read your newspapers, the lenders are clamping down
whos going to pay for all this, the meter rate will have to go up, big style, or all drivers will have to put more hours in, how many more hours are there in a day you can work

now i come to vehicle advertising, what right have the Council to take away peoples incomes, some of these cab owners have years contracts to advertise, with a stroke of a pen they now want to take it away

who the hell want the city arms plastered all over your door, we are not bin wagons, we are not corporate to the Council, just makes it more easy for the thug to put your window through thinking ah well its a council vehicle
suppose it looks good when the Council stand up and say, hey [to the public] look what we did, we smartened up OUR taxi fleet

i don't like it it stinks,
ok there are a few sheds, not many, half a dozen or but this would have changed withing a year or so, now where did i park that K reg Sierria
