They are also furious that 203020 had been operating without valid licences for several months after the original company ceased trading and a new company with the same name continued using the taxi plates—a move against council policy.

Their anger increased when the council agreed to grant 71 public taxi plates to the private hire firm at a meeting held behind closed doors.

In last night's evening paper Mr 203020 said (it's not on the website)-

Mr Young added that there are fewer taxis with yellow plates, which allow them to pick up fares from the street and ranks, than many drivers thought.

"Sixty-four plates got handed back in over the course of the last financial year and then our 71 cars are off so that is 130 fewer vehicles on the road".

So it looks like the Courier has gotten things mixed up a bit and the bit about the 71 yellow plates being granted refers to when they got them following the court case a couple of years ago.

So if this is the case then I don't know what the trade are getting excited about, because that battle was lost a long time ago, and since they have now had to give the plates back then that's a good thing for the rest of the taxis and in that regard they've won the war?

Why is it termed strike action? Don't people go on strike when they have a dispute with their employer? These guys are not in dispute with their employer because the council or the police are not their employers. Most of these guys, I would guess are classed as self employed so how they be classed as going on strike?
It would be more accurate to describe their action as a protest rather than a strike.

the 71 public hire plates handed out behind closed doors is meant to be reading 71 ph plates, the 71 hacks were handed out by a court a few years ago, the courier editor is famous for mixing things up, i talked to him once and as he was writing down what i was saying he stopped now and again to read it back, after about 20 mins i told him to forget it ,203020 did not apply for the 71 ph plates in the ususal manner ie fill out a ph opeators license form and wait till the next licensing meeting, the plates were handed to them at the behind closed doors meeting to help them keep working, bear in mind they were acting illegally by continuing to run their hacks unlicensed which if it had been any other operator would have meant a punishment of probably a six months suspension,a few dundee cabbies forgot to pay their yearly renewal plate fee on time, one cabbies wife had just been diagnosed with cancer the last thing on his mind was his plate fees, their helping hand ? six months suspension, when your plate is suspended you cant even apply for a ph plate so its back to being a driver for six months, when the six months are up you are granted a brand new license with the new wheelchair rules attached, a few saloons were caught out and a couple of doblo owners had to go to ph after forgetting their fee money

What they should do.... is blockade the council car parks in the mornings. no Council employees going into work, soon makes them think.

This action would have more impact than blocking the whole town centre.
