Knife-wielding robber threatens taxi driver
23 October 2007
A MAN wielding a Stanley knife threatened a taxi driver in Hailsham on Saturday evening, October 12.
Police say the driver was flagged down by a man in the Grovelands area at about 9.20pm.
He got into the taxi and asked to go to Diplocks.
But while they were driving along Western Road the man told the driver to stop, grabbed him and threatened him with the knife.
He demanded money but the driver managed to struggle free.
The man made off without taking anything.
He is described as being Eastern European with dark hair and wearing a black bomber jacket and jeans.
He told the driver he was Italian.
DC Sean Stapley said: 'This is a particularly nasty incident and the driver was very shaken.
'There could have been more serious consequences if he had not put up the struggle that he did.
'We ask anyone with information to come forward to help us trace the person responsible for this.'
Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen this man hanging around the area where he was picked up by the taxi or where he got out at Western Road.
