Maybe a fairly high proportion were issued notices, but overall, it only represents a low % over the full fleet.

Why weren't any hacks involved?

Feeling persecuted, Triggy?

Vosa checked the Hacks on the 31st August.

50% of the Hacks were checked by the VOSA Engineer.

The figures were 50% checked by VOSA, 100% pass rate. :-o :-o

Sent to Stamp End testing station for further testing. 0%

Prohibition notices 0%

Plates removed 0%

Private Hire check.

5% of PH vehicles checked.

Sent to Stamp end 50% of those checked

Prohibition notices, 20% of those checked.

Plates removed, 13% of those checked.

Now Tiggy, that is not "Good" is it?

.

Last night I was going to say that the Lincoln HCs are so damn perfect that there was no point in checking them, but I bit my tongue and thought I should wait for jimbo's input.

Well, I was nearly right. :)

Of course, the Lincoln HCs should be congratulated on their achievement, but on the other hand the HC v PH comparison shouldn't be made lightly, because since only 5% of PHs were stopped as compared to 50% of HCs then it would hardly be surprising if the more dodgy looking PHs were the ones stopped, thus comparing the pass rates doesn't give the whole picture.

Indeed, the article said:

“The inspectors from VOSA commented on the high quality of vehicles that they saw last week compared to other areas that they have examined. This shows that the standard of the majority of Lincoln's private hire vehicles is good and that they are meeting our safety standards. This is excellent news and the public can be assured that we will continue with these spot checks to make sure that this standard is retained.”

So in general terms it looks like the fleet in Lincoln generally is quite good, but of course I'm sure someone might tell us different.

There is no age limit in Lincoln for Hackney Carriage or Private Hire Vehicles. Yet it is seen that the whole fleet is of a Higher than average standard. (especially the Hack's) So what are age limits if not an abitrary and uneccessary distraction from good vehicle management?

But why is it news when vehicles fail, but not news when none fail?

I suppose that news generally tends to highlight the negative rather than positive.

From reading the many recent articles about the inspections around the UK, I would say Lincoln PH and HC did pretty well in keeping up to standard.
I get many comments from customers saying Lincoln PH has some very nice and tidy vehicles, including my 407.
I'm noticing more newer and modern vehicles replacing the existing ones, so you would expect standards to be high. Lets hope it stays that way.

Almost inevetably, the "Lincolnshire Echo" overdramatised the story with a splash headline, "How safe is your Taxi?" And of course they wanted to illustrate the article, and used three stock photographs. One of a FX4 toplight. one of a lady hailing a TX2, and the third of the (full) Taxi rank in St Mary Street.

Todays Echo contains an apology for the misrepresentation. Muppets.

That is a step in the right direction.

I suppose they could have been a lot quicker, but then again no-one speeds in Lincoln.

online version of which? The original article or the apology?

The original was a full page, the retraction was a box about 2ins square.

In my experience as soon as the word goes around that a spot check is in operation most of the dodgy vehicles skiddadle back home so the fact that only 5% of PH were checked is quite significant suggesting that the police motorcyclists were having difficulty finding a lot of them

In my experience the police do not pick and choose which vehicles to call in for a spot check they just look for plated vehicles stop them and hand them the spot check notice

Which reminds me it is over 5 years since we last had one round here the trouble is they usually pick a busy friday night since the only available facility is the local garage which does the hackney testing so they can't do it during the day we must be due one soon
