East Cambridgeshire District Council's new guide for taxi and private hire drivers also includes a reminder for those with blind passengers: "When you talk to someone who uses a guide dog, speak directly to the person - not the dog."

I suspect it went to half a dozen sub-committees first, then to another half a dozen full committees. [-(

I'd like to know what the RNIB would have to say about this, I bet after they stopped laughing they could advise this idiotic council on the correct way to treat a blind person! :)

I sent an email to the RNIB this is thier reply

We have heard of people speaking
to guide dogs as opposed to the person using the guide dog. To the
extent that the guide dog is told to take the person using the guide
dog, to platform 4 as an example, for their train to whatever
destination they are going to.

Now that I can believe!

Spoke to someone fairly senior at the rnib today basically they come across a lot of people crouching down and talking to the dog as if it can understand English so it is not such a silly idea however although it is a common occurence they wouldn't consider it neccessary to include it in such guidelines so the council in this instance are a little over zealous
