Suspended taxi driver fined pounds 200

A FORMER cabbie was slapped with fines and costs totalling pounds 200 after he admitted illegally driving a private hire vehicle.

David John Devey, of Brookmount, Acrefair, was employed as a private hire driver but was suspended by the Licensing Committee in January.

They took the decision he was not a fit and proper person to hold such a licence.

A Wrexham Council spokeswoman said Devey, 37, was driving on Brook Street, Wrexham in a private hire minibus when he was approached by licensing enforcement officers.

Devey claimed he was driving the vehicle back from a garage.

But when officers asked him to name the garage, he said he couldn't remember which one it was.

He later pleaded guilty to the offence in court.

Andy Lewis, Chief Housing and Public Protection Officer said: "This result reflects the on-going investigations into unlicensed taxis.

"Mr Devey flouted the law and his actions had very serious implications in relation to public safety."
