Worrying leniency

A Lot of husbands, partners, boyfriends and parents will be puzzled by the remarks of Judge David Pugsley - and more than a little concerned.

Up before the judge was Abdul Quayyum who, while working as a taxi driver, molested a woman passenger.

This was not a light, glancing contact. He grabbed her private parts, asked "are they pierced?", bragged about his own body and then promised to show the woman "a good time".

He then, with absurd cheek and misplaced optimism, gave her his phone number.

Judge Pugsley said: "It would weaken the public confidence in taxi drivers if it wasn't made clear this sort of behaviour is going to lead to a prison sentence."

The public, indeed, has a right to expect nothing less - but then he suspended Quayyum's six-month prison sentence, so the now-former cabbie will not go behind bars unless he offends again.

His victim was 20 years old and, unsurprisingly, has been traumatised by the incident.

She had to take a month off work and now suffers from anxiety and depression.

The memory will probably stay with her for the rest of her life.

Taxi drivers are a profession which comes into regular contact with the public. Obviously they have many opportunities to take advantage of women travelling alone.

The behaviour of Quayyum, said the judge, was not "deviant sexual activity in its extreme force", but rather "truly unpleasant harassment".

The actions were "distressing and serious", he added.

But many people will feel that applies to the leniency of the sentence as well.

Which begs the question how did he interfere with the punter, unless of course he was'nt a Taxi driver . . . .

Well let's all hope and pray that this scumbag gets a speeding ticket during the period of his suspension.

And let's hope the council have taken away his license.
