Cabbies are caught out
Taxi drivers flouting the law in Newcastle have been caught out by police.
Officers from the North Staffordshire Division, together with enforcement officers from Newcastle Borough Council and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA), carried out the operation on Friday night.
They carried out road safety and public reassurance checks of private hire vehicles and hackney carriages in and around the town centre.
Fifteen taxis were taken to the council depot on Knutton Lane for a thorough examination by VOSA.
Of the 15 examined, which were licensed to both Newcastle and Stoke-on-Trent councils, four were impounded for serious defaults and their licenses suspended. Five were issued with minor default notices and one was seized on suspicion of being unlicensed and uninsured.
