Man denies crash in which woman was paralysed

Echo

A MAN denies causing a horrific accident in which a young woman was left paralysed.

The trial of Paul Prior, 38, of Hillway, Westcliff, began this morning at Southend Crown Court.

He allegedly drove his Audi A8 in a "dangerous and reckless" manner causing Cate Stephens' Peugeot 206 to be rammed off the A120, three miles from Stansted airport, on September 12, 2006.

Physiotherapist Miss Stephens, who was 26 at the time of the accident, from Oadby in Leicestershire, broke her neck and has been left in a wheelchair.

Prior, owner of an executive taxi comapny, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, but not guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm.

It is the first time Essex Police have prosecuted someone for causing grievous bodily harm through driving.

The case continues.

More in tomorrow's Echo.
