Letter: You say - Cabbies' shame

Mr G. Parker

ON a recent visit to my home town of Liverpool over Christmas, I had the misfortune of having to use the hackney carriage service.

As I am in a wheelchair and paralysed from the chest down, this is my only form of transport.

I was astounded at the ineptitude of the taxi drivers when it came to my getting in and out of their vehicles.

On each occasion, none of the drivers knew how to use the equipment they possess, including the ramp and extension seat belt. I felt totally unsafe.

Surely Liverpool council should have something in place that trains drivers for this purpose as part of their taxi badge, and endorsed by the hackney carriage company.

Come on, Liverpool council. Get your act together. You are supposed to be the Capital of Culture 2008 and yet disabled people cannot travel safely in your city.

Mr G. Parker, Leeds
