You should have a tariff sheet from your local L.O.

If you charge for anything other than what you are permitted, you could get into a spot of bother.

What council do you work under???
Some councils do not require a meter

I work in Edinburgh and I do have the tariff sheet (see below) but its a little confusing. Under extra payments it says that the call out charge is £0.60 "applicable when pre-booked..", as a PH driver, does that mean I can start the meter and add £0.60 to each pickup on the meter?
Also, if theres more than 2 customers in the car I charge an extra £0.20 per person? Does this mean that, if I have a pickup of 4 people the extras are £0.60 for call out charge and then £0.20 per person, is it 4 x £0.20 or 2 x £0.20 (for the 2 extra people)?
Thanks for your help.

Ask firm you are receiving the work from.

As they will get the hump if you overcharge, and you will go skint if you undercharge.

Right lets get you sorted, as a PH you will always be pre booked so every run you do you will have £0.60p extra, as you are not allowed to pick up of the street unless the punter has called you, or you have been sent for them, then if you have more than 2 passengers you can have an extra £0.20 per passenger
so if you have 4 passengers you will have £1.00 showing in the extras and for 3 it will be £0.80 plus you fare of course

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought that as a private hire driver and vehicle all fares were negotiated. Do private hire in Edinburgh have to use taxi meters? If so why do they have the 2 difforent types of vehicle?

I have always been of the opinion that councils can't set PH fares, but it seems that some Scottish councils insist on that.

And some don't. ](*,)

Well the legislation does say that it's an offence for a PH fitted with a taximeter to charge more than the council tariff, so clearly it's recognised that a PH can be fitted with a meter. However, the legislation is silent on when a meter might be fitted, so to that extent it's up to councils and/or individual firms.

It's certainly the case that there's many PH cars in places like Fife, Edinburgh, Aberdeen(?) that are fitted with meters, so Dundee is by no means unique in this regard.

Yes PH have them here. Same tariff as Hacks.

If you don't have a meter then Private hire firms can charge what they like. If you do have a meter then you can't charge more than the meter tariff. The wording of the 1982 act alludes to the fact that you can't charge more than the hackney meter tariff.

I might add that this assumption has never been challenged in a court of law, much like the vehicle scenario.

Regards

But this one is fairly clear cut rather than a mere assumption?

Well this is all news to me.

I know councils can set the tarrifs for Hackneys but had no knowledge they can officially set the tariff for Private Hire.

I am aware that they do 'unofficially' in the vast majority of areas because PH fleets tend to follow the hack rates.

But surely a PH can charge what ever he likes as he enters a contract when taking the booking.
