The drivers may not be the problem you think though. Who was driving them last year? They could apply for badges the same as anyone else.

The tuk tuks were being driven by people who had no PSV license, no PH license and no taxi license.

In fact many of them had no DVLA license cos they used their French/Polish/Czech etc licenses.

Sadly, not everyone was so happy and the city's taxi lobby waged a ferocious campaign against us - first claiming we breached our licence terms and later saying our vehicles were unsafe.

Both true, and both confirmed by VOSA. :D

Furthermore, given the thousands of journeys we have made in the past two years, we have an excellent safety record.

they didn't need badges to drive the Tuk tuks under the operating system, not even pcv badges but if the Tuk tuks were granted a PH badge then the drivers could also apply for one.

Seems that everyone and everything is to blame except a flawed business model?

The Sunday Mail's take on the news.

RICKSHAW FLEET 'TUKKED' AWAY

THE UK's first fleet of tuk-tuks are to be taken off the roads for good.

TucTuc Limited's director, Dominic Ponniah, said they have become impossible to run due to "archaic legislation".

The tuk-tuks run like a bus service but Mr Ponniah claimed that was too rigid and the company were fined pounds 8000 for operating the rickshaws like a taxi service.

He added: "We have decided to resign our licence. We have really pushed for new legislation but the vehicles can't be licensed in the appropriate way."

TucTuc introduced a fleet of 12 motorised rickshaws in Brighton in 2006.

Word on the street is that Mr Tuk Tuk says the reason he stopped his service last year was that his insurance company withdrew their cover.

If, and it's a big if, all the claims against the tuk tuk service paid out in full, then it could lead to many 10s of 1000s, possibly 10s of 100s of 1000s, of pounds in compensation.

Not the best deal his insurance company have ever done. :-$
