These guys are registered with the National council for voluntary organisations, which in turn is registered as a charity but it would appear to me they are running a business rather than a charity.

NCVO Definition.

Voluntary organisation - An independent, self-governing body of people who have joined together voluntarily to take action for the benefit of the community. A voluntary organisation may employ paid staff or volunteers, but must be established otherwise than for financial gain.

One assumes all the money collected through the various enterprises goes to these volunteer fireman as expenses. I wonder how much they collected last year?

With the decline in the hire of fire engines for this type of job, I doubt that they "collected" much at all.

I meant the whole activity, if you read their website they are into a lot more than just conveying paying passengers in fire appliances, it would seem the whole exercise is geared to sustaining a business. I could be wrong of course but that's the impression I get. They don't have charitable status as is a requirement for every charity.

The service they provide is not charitable and therefore I can only assume that the motive behind it might have more to do with sustaining a business rather than supplying a community service.

I'm not sure what the connection is between this operation and Excite travel but I understand the fenland fire team is at this moment under a degree of scrutiny from fenland council licensing department.

To be fare to Fenland licensing team they have not swept the unlicensed issue under the carpet, what they are doing is liaising with other local authorities to determine the best course of action.

It is my understanding that Excite travel is registered with Fenland for at least one and perhaps several private hire licenses. I expect the picture to widen within the coming days but if anyone has any other info then naturally it is worth discussing. After all, we want to see the end of unlicensed operators, drivers and vehicles, of every shape and size.

There is no loophole in the law, the law is quite explicit, just because these people choose to ignore it, is immaterial.

I can see the advantage of riding around in a luxury limo but a fire engine with compulsory seat belt provisions? I don't think so.

In Manchester We have a night club bus that collects passengers from around the city centre and up to four miles on the South side of town and takes them to a well known nightclub called Sankeys, free of charge. Its been going on for years and Manchester city council let it happen.

Some of these fire engines that have had the water tank removed and fitted out in the back look quite good but there are no windows and I would think people would get quite claustrophobic in there. Not my cup of tea.
