Taxi Driver Online

How do you think I stand with this one!
On Friday night I had a taxi at the end of a cul-de-sac when a hit and run happened at the other end. The police closed the cul-de-sac and I was unable to get the taxi out. The driver of the car involved in the hit and run has been caught. Do you think I am able to claim for the taxi fare to fetch the driver from the incident and for the loss of earnings because the car was held within the police cordon for 12 hours?

Might have a case against the driver in theory. In practice it would probably cost you a fortune in legal fees and the court would probably order him to pay you £1 a month or something.

Or was you thinking of claiming against the police?

I doubt that I could claim against the police but I was thinking about claiming from his insurance company, assuming that he had insurance.

As it was a hit and run I was assuming that he didn't have insurance, but good luck. I would be interested to hear how you get on.

Talk to your solicitor, see what they think.
Talk to your insurers as well. They can find out if this guy had insurance and may pursue an uninsured losses claim against him for you.

Why did the police stop you from leaving, 12 hours seems a long time?

Quire right. I've seen extremely bad accidents cleared in less than an hour. There must have been exceptional circumstances in play here to keep a taxi captive for that length of time. What were they?

It happened late at night when it was dark and they wanted to preserve any evidence until daylight. It appears that it was not you everyday hit and run. It seems that it was a deliberate attempt to kill the pedestrian. There had been some sort of argument between the driver and the victim, "they are neighbours" and the driver got in his car and deliberatly mounted the pavement and ran him down and then ran off. It all looks a bit nasty.
