from 1300hrs till around 2200hrs panic set in at York stn as Stn Taxis couldn't cope with the passenger volume work load, due to faults on the tracks

the all clear was given for non permit holders to enter the Stn rank to clear the thousands of pasengers stuck there for hours and hours on end
at one time nearly all York Stn taxis was out of town on long credit jobs and no one left to service the rank

permission was given for any non permit holder to work the rank

one non permit holder taxi was refused permission to pick up by Transport Police as he noted he didn't have a permit showing and moved him on his way,
another non permit holder got himself a decent 120 quid job only for someone at Stn Taxis to complain and the job was taken from him, he must have gone to the office to ask for a price for them to find out

even tho most Stn taxis was out of town, those that were left in town complained to the taxi management that the non permit holders were pinching their work as thousands punters/passengers still could not get a taxi

the non permit holders permission to enter was withdrawn

Gridlocks happen, I don't suppose this is the first time it has happened and it probably won't be the last. Maybe those York cabbies who don't have station permits should have boycotted the station and let the passengers wait.

I'm confused by your statement that non permit taxis were given the all clear to work the station and then you say one non permit taxi was refused permission to pick up. This appears to be a contradiction but you do say that permission to pick up was withdrawn after a complaint by permit holders. For how long were you allowed to pick up?

Regards

That'll be why the rank at Kings Cross had lot's of waiting Taxi's on it down this end!

Problems up in York then?

I should have waited, I might have bumped into you Mr Pete. A trip back to London from your Station rank would have been nice as well! :D

Who actually issues the permits, the rail company or a bunch of wide boy taxi owners.
If its the latter they should have that privilege removed from them and the train company or council should issue them :D .
You did say in one of you posts that station taxis decide who works there and if you face dose not fit your flecked

Even the dumbest of passengers soon start walking if the que's that bad. Could'nt all the Taxi's who don't work the station hang up outside and just pick up the passengers there. From memory, you walk out the front onto a public road?

Once again Stinky you come with half a story and misguided facts, in reality most of the station drivers were supportive of the extra help in clearing the ranks, it was only three permit holders who complained to British Transport Police, who inturn did prevent non permit holders entering the station, so the man in charge at stationtaxis allocated credit work to non permit holders so that they were not picking up on the rank, this did go some way in clearing the numbers I can confirm that true to their word all credit work was paid in cash the following day.
It may be worth remembering that the problem was of a gigantic nature and no taxi firm in the world would have been able to cope with the volumes of stranded people,

I think that most of us got the drift on Stinky's post, so why where station drivers not informed that the rank was open to anyone, as it should be anyway, or the police.
What god dam right has station taxis got to dictate who works there, all permits should be issued by the rail company or the council, to any person who wishes to pay the fee.
I hope that all the ones that are excluded bring this to the attention of the council and the rail company, as you cannot just leave passengers stranded all because some little dictator says so
