Taxi driver choked with belt
POLICE are hunting two thugs who tried to choke a taxi driver with his own
seatbelt.
Luckily for the victim a passerby called police and frightened the men off
but not before they helped themselves to the taxi driver’s mobile phone and cash.
When they were picked up by the driver in Gorton, Tameside on Tuesday
12 February, they claimed to be going to a doctor’s appointment in Hattersley.
When he arrived at 8am at Hattersley Road East, opposite Porlock Court,
the 25-year-old driver questioned whether the GP’s surgery would be open.
At this, the men became aggressive and that was when they tried to choke
him with his seatbelt and demanded his car keys.
But a man then approached the car and said he had called the police. The
offenders fled after stealing the victim’s mobile phone and a small amount of cash.
The first offender is described as white, aged 25-28 years old, 6ft tall and
of medium build. He had very short hair and was wearing black tracksuit
bottoms and a grey top. The second offender is described as white, 6ft tall
and of slim build. He had medium length dark hair and heavy stubble and
was dressed in dark clothing.
Detective Constable Steven Hatton of Tameside CID said: "This incident
shows the dangers taxi drivers face in their job. It is vital that any
witnesses or anyone with information comes forward. The incident
occurred opposite a bus stop during rush hour and someone must have
seen something. I would also like to speak to the man that told the
offenders he had called the police."
