ok so our council has decided to change the medical side of our licence renewals.
From your 45th birthday and 5 yearly till your 60 (then annually) you will need to take a group 2 medical.
This will in effect rule out 25% + of current drivers.
is this right?

im not saying a group 2 medical is or isnt right, but what about these guys who have bought cabs on finance and can no longer drive due to this new ruling?
if it had been a rule from the outset fair enough but it hasnt been

do they have rights?

for me personally im ok but i think its harsh on these guys who WILL hit financial ruin

whats your view?

I must be honest and say I didn't know what a group 2 medical is? I had to look it up so if anyone else is in the same boat as me then the following link might give you a brief idea.

Group 2 (heavy goods vehicle (HSV) and public service vehicle (PSV) licence holders).

I would get all the drivers together and confront the council, WTF has hgv's and PSV's got to do with driving a cab.
What council do you come under :?:

We in the Borders dont need a medical until 65 and its a basic health check payed for by the council

Check out our medical application form especially section 5 which relates to DVLA advice on current medical standards of fitness to drive, might help.

I'm confused when you say it will rule out 25%. Surely if they pass it will rule out 0%. :?

I understand your concern re group 2, but in relation to injections for diabetes the courts have been quite good in keeping many drivers their licenses as long as they have the back up of the specialist.

Well it really depends how they view it?
If you need a group 2 medical then if you do have diabetes / heart disease hearing/eye problems etc you have a fair chance of failure.

I just feel it will ruin a lot of peoples lives

one thing is sure When I get a group 2 medical will I be a cabbie?

No chance

but thats here nor there why change it now?

With diabetes controlled only by diet then no problem.
However if you have insulin dependent diabetes then you have to be able to pass a set of parameters laid down for C1 drivers ie smaller trucks only.

The diabetes stuff is included in the DfT best practice guidance for cabs

While I have sympathy with anyone who loses their licence I at the same time do not want my children to be driven by a cab or bus driver who may collapse with a heart attack at any time or whose vision is so poor they cannot even read a number plate at 25 yards or so.

There are 2 sides to most stories.
