We have an exemption under the legislation that requires the wearing of seat belts.

What are your views on this subject?

Do you wear your seat belt anyway, regardless of the exemption?

Do you wear your seat belt in accordance with the law, taking account of your exemption, i.e. Hack out of area, therefore not plying for hire, therefore no exemption?

Do you just not bother wearing your seat belt at all?

I'm awaiting a response to a part 36 offer for a 'rear ender' where my failure to wear a seat belt was challenged by the other side. I think that I have successfully rebuffed the challenge but, if I hadn't my compensation may have been severely diminished.

Is our exemption necessary or justifiable?

What are your thoughts, arguments or general comments?

The exemption gives you the option, its up to each individual to choose whether or not they wear a seat belt.

Their decision, their life.

My views are that around the town/village/city a seat belt can be a pain, on the motorway they are a necessity.

But as JD says, the option is ours.

I never wear a seat belt regardless of whether I am driving my taxi or a private car. Never have done. I detest the nanny state

Our exemption is absolutely justifiable, I just think everyone else should have it too.

Me too I Never wear seat belts, even if I am a passenger, i dont smoke but am thinking of starting just to protest..

A driver that I know had his accident compensation cut, as he was deemed to be ( I think ) 50% to blame for his injuries by not wearing his seat belt.

I've always been aware of the exemption, but I'm forced to wear mine to shut up the seat belt warning alert in my car.

Get an old seat belt buckle for a scrappy and put that in your seat belt holder

Reminds me of when I got my latest motor.

The warning noise drove me mad, so I contacted the manufacture and they said, put it in neutral, start the engine, press the clutch down 3 or 4 times, then stop the engine, then do this and do that, and guess what?

After all that the thing stopped bleeping. Could have struck me down with a feather.

I thought about that, and someone once told me you can buy them from Halfords.
As I'm a Private Hire owner driver I'm not exempt when I don't have a passenger, so it's probably more hassle than wearing the belt.
And as JD quoted: Their decision, their life.

Echo15, a good tip for Hackney drivers who choose not to wear a belt though.

Have you looked in the handbook? My Mondeo had a way of disabling the alarm by turning the ignition on and off three times, or something like that. Good luck.
