Do you really think City of York council will help fund something like this,
when the say they cant afford to fund fireworks in november for the second year running.
my solution was to get window stickers saying CCTV is fitted for a fiver,
i work in york on private hire and had very little trouble since i put them on

You could get a web cam from £ land, and have it on the dash but hide the cable as well :D :D

Hi All

Our council here has just authorised in car CCTV. As a member of the local association, I have been charged with trying to ascertain three things and so would welcome genuine factual comment from citiies already utlilising on:-

1. Any funding or part funding received from council ?

2. Any official released statistics on the reduction of incidents post CCTV installation.

3. Any sensible quotes from users

My thanks in advance guys and gals

We got £150 towards our CCTV from the Council.

Thank you Nigel. Could you tell me which town or city thogh please ? ta

Sorry I missed the thread, we got our cash through the Council, I don't know which Government department they go through but every driver got £150 towards the costs of the system, the Council sourced the supplier of the system then gave them the go ahead to fit the system. I'll find out which department the money came from.

Oh if only life was that simple. If it was really that easy all the companies now selling cctv worldwide would be out of business. Trouble is, one, for you, you will not get anywhere with your stickers if, heaven forbid, you really need the cctv evidence. Indeed, one of our members did just that but it still didn't stop him being attacked. Two for the rest of us who may decide to be more realistic and buy a proper system, the benefits are somewhat outweighed by the idiots who just put up stickers and then all the yobs think that all of us have done the same. Its just the same as the idiotic drivers who take illegal shortcuts with passengers in and then the next poor driver has grief when he wants to go the legal way. Though why they want to with passengers in for less money has no common sense at all anyway. As far as funding is concerned, yes it may be difficult but I think it is totally different from funding fireworks and there are avenues for councils to go down in turn and apply for grants for in taxi cctv.

You have to be carefull which system you choose, you'll not be able to access the images, if your Council runs a CCTV scheme the CCTV controllers or the Police will be the only ones who'll be allowed to open the hard drive and access the images.

Our Council got quite anal when we asked for a certain system, we couldn't have one with sound, we could only have one that took stills when the meter was activated and like I mentioned above the only people who could access the images were the CCTV controllers or the Police.

I am aware of that. The system we are looking at has already been totally aproved by the council taxi licensing. But thank you for pointing out.

I would say that sound is essential for an installation in a cab. What was said by whom and how it was said might be vital evidence in a "Threatening Behaviour" case or in many other situations. These councillors must never forget we are on our own with cash and taking a bunch of drink/drug fuelled yobbos home is not a safe situation. I also think that continuous video is better than stills and why the council should try to apply the 'stills only' sanction when they have given the idea approval in principle is beyond me, especially as they have also stopped the driver having direct access to the images (which I don't have a problem with).

I would hope you have a good local association or better still are active union members and challenge these local little hitlers and their petty attempts at micro-control which undermine the freedom and safety of cab drivers :x

The commissioner has produced a code of conduct to follow and I'm afraid guidelines for the non recording of sound is one of them. However the code states that under certain circumstances recording sound would be acceptable. Having read the code I don't see any problem in respect of Taxis but I'm sure councillors might.

Regards
