February 28, 2008 Thursday

Community car drivers in Dereham are to share in a £500 "thank you" gift from town councillors to help compensate for rocketing fuel prices.

The 20 drivers can claim 40p a mile and town councillors considered increasing their rate due to the higher petrol bills.

But members heard it would mean they would have to declare it for tax and be registered as taxi drivers.

So the finance and resources committee agreed to give £500 to be divided between the drivers.

Well that £500 means they are doing the job for more than social kindness, but then most of us, and most of them, know that already.
