hard to believe that the friend escaped this avalanche but what about the driver?

Daily Post (Liverpool)

March 4, 2008, Tuesday

Liverpool man, 48, crushed in taxi

A LIVERPOOL businessman died after hurricane-force winds set off an avalanche which crushed a taxi he was using.

The 48-year-old died in a cab in the Austrian Alps after a massive rock crashed on to the roof of the taxi in 140mph gales.

He had travelled to the Austrian resort of Soll with a 41-year-old British friend. Austrian police say the Liverpool man died at 11.35 on Saturday morning in his friend's lap, but report that the friend escaped the crash unscathed.

Staff at the Gansleit hotel described the man, whom they named as Mark, as more of a friend than a guest. He had visited the same hotel for the past 15 years.

British owner Steve Woods said the family had spent New Year's Eve at the resort.

"He was far more than a guest, he was like part of the family."
