Taxi driver not insured

A TAXI driver has been caught driving without insurance.
A police officer saw Brian Powell's Vauxhall Zafira parked in Surtees Street, Hartlepool, and investigations revealed it was not insured.

The officer made inquiries at a nearby taxi rank, where the controller confirmed the car belonged to Powell.

The defendant, who had a full clean driving licence before the incident, was contacted by radio and told to get in touch with the officer.

Alan Rutter, prosecuting at Hartlepool Magistrates' Court, said: "The vehicle in question came to the attention of the police officer on the evening of November 21. It was parked up at the time.

"He made inquiries about the vehicle at a nearby taxi rank and the controller said it belonged to the defendant, one of the drivers.

"The controller contacted the defendant and told him to speak to the officer.

"Checks revealed there was no insurance at the time." The court heard Powell was unable to produce his driving documents at the police station and was told of the consequences of failing to produce them.

Powell, 41, of Cromer Walk, Hartlepool, admitted driving without insurance on November 21 last year.

Representing himself, Powell said: "I hold my hands up. I've been found guilty and that's it."

Margaret Sleeman, chairing the bench, endorsed Powell's driving licence with six penalty points, fined him £200 and ordered him to pay a £15 victim surcharge and £25 costs.
