Does anyone know what happens to lost /left property that’s left in a taxi when you hand it in at the taxi office

Not as simple to hand it in is it, as you have to make an appointment to hand it in at our taxi office, so before you start its cost a phone call then the fuel to take it down there then return home, oh and maybe a parking ticket to park up if you cant get into the Council office car park

I have found a few odd shoes , a bra, jackets, cameras, mobile phones, handbags, wallets, credit cards, shopping bags full of stuff stuffed under the front seats, 200 fags, the list goes on, so what happens to this stuff that is handed in at the Council, where does it end up, or can the driver finder lay claim after so long

What do you lot do with “ finds”, its ok taking a look after they get out but you don’t always spot it during the night time

Now what about finding money in the cab, I mean notes are we supposed to hand that in, or do you keep hold of it till the person comes back to you, I remember tales from long ago, never hand cash in at a police stn, it will never be seen again

I recall when some punters get in the cab, and say oh look I just found a fiver on the back seat, that will pay my way home, I have explained that find must be handed over to me but all they come out with is that it must have just dropped out of my pocket as I got in

Awhile ago I found a mobile phone in the cab, it was ringing, I got a passenger who I was carrying to answer it, it went something like this

Hello [taxi passenger]

Caller, what the f**** are you doing with my phone

Taxi passenger, hang on a minute mate calm down, calm down, I have just been instructed by the cab driver to answer this call

Caller, that’s my phone and I want it back

Taxi passenger, I’ll hand you over to the driver

Cab driver, yes hello mate found your phone in the cab, I am still working so got a passenger to answer

Caller, ok can you get the phone back to me, whats your cab number

Cab driver, well yes but you will have to wait till I get a job to somewhere near your area, and there will be a meter charge, my cab number is so and so
Caller, no probs mate my address is so and so, house number so and so, I’ll wait up

Around 0330 hrs in the morning I knocks on this door, no answer, really big knocks no answer, so calls it a night

At 10.00hrs next day the phone went

Taxi licence dept, we believe you are holding a mobile phone belonging to a Mr so and so

Me, yes

Taxi licence, that mobile phone is property of Mr so and so and should not be in your possession

Me
Now listen to me, this phone was left in a cab, it wasn’t taken as a fare, I tried to return it but the owner gave the wrong house number, the battery has gone flat so now there is no contact,, you can tell the owner he can come to the taxi rank at so and so time, plus there is an outstanding taxi fare to which I made to attempt delivery of 5 quid

Taxi licence, that’s ok but we was given a different version of what happened re the mobile phone

I just take anything down to the police station and let them deal with it.

I'd go along with that. Sometimes it is.
I wouldn't give a licence number over the phone to anyone.
If they give you grief or won't pay the return fare, tell them to pick the phone up at xyz cop shop (make sure it's nowhere near them  ) or chuck it out of the window.

You need to be careful and the Police Station is the best place to leave lost property.

We need to be mindful of the "theft by finding" offence.

Nice generous punters get their phones back for free, and you usually find they reward you anyway for your troubles

If the punter was a tight arse, as in the old £9.80, wait on the 20p change variety, I'd take their phone back as a fare.

The alternative is the official line of handing in at ANY Metropolitan Police Station . . . . and there's a lot of those.

Of course there is always the easier way, and that's to check your passenger compartment as the fare gets out.

If you go to the reception desk at 9 St Leonards the receptionist will take the lost property and give you a receipt, make sure there is a date on the receipt as anything not claimed within 3 months becomes yours, a driver recently received £60 in cash which was left in his car but the mobile phone was destroyed as the council said it contained names and addresses which were covered by the data protection act.

Your bylaws will tell you exactly what to do with property left in your vehicle and I think you will find that the bylaws will state that you must immediately hand in any lost property to the licensing department.

Those of you who have taken one of these so called NVQ's in transport would, obviously know that.

If any of them get stroppy! like you will deliver my T.Phone to my address, then politely tell them that you will be at so and so rank at xx time and they can come and collect it, or they can find it down the local nick. Other than that - chuck it out of the window.

Did take one back some years ago, barely got a thank you - it aint going to happen again.

I've had mixed fortunes with mobile phones but normally if they don't ring their phone to see who has it then I phone them myself. I always advise them that their phone is safe and they can either pick it up at my place or the Town hall. Sometimes you get rewarded and sometimes you don't but more often than not I don't have to move from my house to return a mobile phone.

As far as London goes GBC is spot on. I suppose that's only to be expected when you do the knowledge. The official procedure for London is thus,

Lost property.

Any person who finds property accidentally left in a cab must immediately hand it to the driver. The driver must search his cab at the termination of each hiring or as soon as practicable after each hiring; and if he finds or receives any property he must within 24 hours deposit it at a police station unless it is meanwhile satisfactorily claimed by the owner.

The police station will forward the property to Transport for London, who may deliver to the cab driver property not claimed within three months or sell or otherwise dispose of it and pay the cab driver an award on a prescribed scale:

Property claimed must be delivered to the claimant on payment of certain sums in respect of costs and of an award to the cab driver:

Transport for London has power to open packages, bags or other receptacles for the purpose of tracing the owners of property or ascertaining contents:

Besides GBC and me, I wonder how many people knew that? lol

Those with nimble minds might wish to explore the question of lost property in relation to the data protection act 1998? Lost property doesn't only apply to tangible goods as those of us who have studied the 1998 act can testify. Perhaps such a relation should be incorporated into an NVQ level three but who amongst us knows what that relation is? Stu from Fastblacks opened a rather nonsensical debate on data protection some years ago which Dusty and I found rather juvenile in some respects and totally meaningless in others. However I'm sure there is someone out there other than myself who knows the connection between lost property in the general sense and lost property in relation to the DPA 1998.

A final note on this subject of lost property in respect of London. I think the Private Hire Vehicles (London) Act 1998 s 3(4) (amended by the Greater London Authority Act 1999 states a procedure must be maintained as to the recording of "lost property".

I think London operators may have to keep at each operating centre specified in his licence a record containing specified details of any lost property found at their premises or in any private hire vehicle used to carry out a booking and any property reported to him at the premises as having been lost.

I don't think anyone has highlighted the fact that private hire drivers are also prone to finding lost property in their vehicles.
