Plea for cameras in taxis

Taxi and private hire vehicle drivers in Southampton are being urged to
install digital cameras in their vehicles to deter violent attacks.

The city council has secured funding for 90 of the cameras which it says
will help to bring passengers who break the law to justice.

The cameras are available on a first come, first served basis for £150.

The cameras are available on a first come, first served basis, unless people have previously requested a camera, at a cost of £150 - representing a huge saving from the advertised price of £550.

The cameras:

*work automatically when the meter is switched on *include a driver override panic button which will trigger fast operation of the cameras to obtain more evidence of what is happening *come with signs to make passengers aware that the vehicle is fitted with the camera *may soon also be able to come with voice recording technology (currently in production) but this would increase the total cost of the equipment by a further £50.

The cameras will be fitted by appointment at a council location.

I'm sure many people would want a camera fitted to their own specifications, providing it met with the rules of the Data protection act.

The lack of voice is a major concern because pictures alone won't exonerate you from wrongful verbal accusations. Therefore this CCTV equipment without voice is in my opinion Inadequate for the purpose especially when you take into account that there are many CCTV systems already available that do come with sound recording.

Well done to Southampton council for subsidizing CCTV.

As for prices, well I think you can get a basic one, with one camera, for £350.

I've recently seen a supa dupa digital one that goes for about £500-600. And might put one of them in my car.

One of the benefits of the systems I've been looking at is that they can also be rented.

The cheaper one for about £3-4 a week, and the supa dupa for about £5-6 a week.
