Taxis for pupils had no licence

A COUPLE have been prosecuted for operating an unlicensed taxi for school runs.

Dorothy Stabler, 53, of Walker Road, Salterbeck, Workington, took schoolchildren from addresses in Workington and Seaton to Stainburn and Seaton School. The Skoda Octavia used, on January 18 and 21, was not licensed for use as a hackney carriage.

Mrs Stabler pleaded guilty to two offences of driving a vehicle as a hackney carriage without a licence when she appeared at West Allerdale Magistrates Court in Workington yesterday.

She was prosecuted by Allerdale Council as was her husband Robert Stabler, 45, who owned the car. Mr Stabler, of the same address, pleaded guilty to allowing Mrs Stabler to drive the vehicle as a hackney carriage without a licence. She was fined £150 and Mr Stabler, £250. Both were ordered to pay £65 court costs.

Was it licensed as anything else?

The fines seem very small when you consider how much money they might well have saved when compared with a licensed vehicle ](*,) . How long had this been going on for and was the education authority in on the job [-X or was it a private contract. :-#

I wonder, cumbria county council usually insist on your HC badge and a copy of your HC vehicle license , as well as insurance.

Leicestershire county council insist on cars being either hackney or private hire but it hasn't stopped them from giving several contracts to a company that is using 4 passenger saloons that are registered as PCVs and at least one driver has never had a CRB check.
