No wonder I'm earning such sh*te money. Seriously, though, does it just keep going up? And do we just keep raising prices while the recession hit general public take fewer and fewer cabs?

Er... something's got to give?

I am told that the price of diesel is expected to reach about £1.30 a litre wether the price per barrel falls or not while it was at 99.9p a litre margins were being squeezed retailers as well as the oil companies are now taking the opportunity to recover the lost profits from the the period when they were held in by the £1.00 a litre ceiling

The only waty it will come into check is if consumers reduce demand and there is very little sign of that happening

Everyone was up in arms a few months back about it hitting £1 a litre, it seems now that everyone has just laid back and given in.

Getting harder and harder to earn a crust.

Well Oil hit another record high today, trading at $114 a barrel.

Things will give, it's now pushing the price of everyday items like milk and eggs through the roof, and that hammers everybody, car or no car.

Is there a chance that there may be a miracle in the pipeline, or do pigs really fly.
If the government where to scrap the VAT on diesel only, it may help but they would also have to reduce the duty by 30 to 50 pence

It makes sense, but if the gov did that then those nasty speculators would just increase it via the markets.

Unless of course the gov fixed the price. :-k

I would bet that the government have no legal right to scrap the VAT on diesel. I bet it is something that has come from Europe.

They have every right to change the level of VAT... they could bring it down to 10 per cent...

Read it again, Skippy asked for the government to scrap the VAT not change it. I think you will find that the government have to charge VAT on fuel even if it is 5% like it is for heating fuel at the moment.

If you follow the tax charges from point of entry,ie barrels arriving into this country, you'll find that there's a tax at this point, whether it be VAT or a straight tax charge I can't remember. than at the refinery it is refined and sold, now this is where the main tax charge is and it is not VAT... the product is then sold plus VAT to either companies that resell or straight out the door of their own petrol stations...and of course VAT
