Police appeal following reports of unlicensed taxi and sexual assault in Stamford

A man has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault after police investigated reports of a fake taxi service.

Three reports were received by Lincolnshire Police about a vehicle in the Stamford area that was being operated as an unlicensed taxi.

The first was made on Friday (February 17) and related to an incident in which a man's cash card went missing during the journey and was later used.

Police then received two further reports of suspicious activity, including an alleged attempted sexual assault.

Officers have since arrested one man on suspicion of sexual assault. He has been released on police bail with conditions not to enter Lincolnshire and not to claim he is a taxi driver.

Anyone who saw men with a grey Skoda Octavia approaching people and offering taxi rides in Stamford town centre are asked to contact police.

A spokesperson for Lincolnshire Police said: "We are particularly keen to see any dashcam footage which may have captured vehicles without valid licences approaching members of the public.

"We would also like to remind people that taxis in Lincolnshire have to display a valid taxi driver licence which has a licence number specific to that driver."

Anyone with information should contact the investigating officer by email on jessica.cook2@lincs.police.uk quoting incident 4 of February 18.

I doubt the bookies will give you odds of him being from Peterborough

The consequences of zero on the ground enforcement ! We had an attempted murder at the bus station as well in the last few days

A couple of interesting details in the official Lincs Police press release. It looks like there were two men, and they might have both been in the same vehicle, although maybe one was touting while the other intended doing the driving.

But if there were two in the same vehicle, then it's no wonder suspicions were raised, quite apart from everything else. On the other hand, it's not that long ago we were reading about the two-door Fiesta driver in Plymouth who managed to lure a woman into his car :?

But you kind of get the impression that the pair didn't put too much thought into all of this #-o

Appeal following reports of unlicensed taxi in Stamford area

https://www.lincs.police.uk/news/lincol ... ford-area/

We are appealing for witnesses following three reports that the driver of a vehicle is claiming to run a taxi service operating in the Stamford area.

We received a report that a man had got into a vehicle purporting to be a taxi in Stamford town centre on Friday, 17 February. His card went missing during the ride and has been subsequently been used. Crime number 23000109328 relates.

We received a further report from a member of the public at 12.24am on Saturday, 18 February of two men in a vehicle claiming to run a taxi service in the town centre. Incident number 4 of 18 February relates.

In a separate incident we received a report later that night that two men in a grey-coloured Skoda Octavia estate in the town were approaching members of the public and offering taxi rides without a valid licence. A group of women reported they got in to the vehicle, and that the driver used a mobile phone to attempt to take a card payment. It was also reported that the driver attempted to sexually assault one of the passengers. Incident 28 of 18 relates.

We have arrested a 39-year-old man on suspicion of sexual assault in connection with the second incident. He has been released on police bail with conditions not to enter Lincolnshire and not to approach members of the public alluding to be a taxi driver.

Our enquiries into all three incidents are ongoing, and we would now appeal to members of the public with any information which might help to come forward.

We are particularly keen to see any dashcam footage which may have captured vehicles without valid licences approaching members of the public.

We would also like to remind people that taxis in Lincolnshire have to display a valid taxi driver licence which has a licence number specific to that driver.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Investigating Officer by email on jessica.cook2@lincs.police.uk,or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers 0800111 555 anonymously, quoting incident number 4 of the 18 Feb.

Arrest over woman's sexual assault in unlicensed taxi

Image

A man has been arrested after a woman was sexually assaulted in an unlicensed taxi.

The passenger said she was attacked by the driver in Stamford on Saturday night, Lincolnshire Police said.

The force said it had received three reports of drivers allegedly running a taxi service without a valid licence in the area on 17 and 18 February.

A 39-year-old man was held on suspicion of sexual assault and has been released on bail with conditions.

He is not allowed to enter Lincolnshire and approach the public alluding to be a taxi driver, police said.

Lincolnshire Police said the passenger was among a group of women who got into a grey Skoda Octavia estate at about 01:45 GMT and the driver attempted to sexually assault one of them.

Bank card missing

Earlier that same night, shortly before 00:30, a member of the public reported two men in a vehicle claiming to run a taxi service in the town centre, a spokesperson said.

The day before a man reported his bank card had been misused after it went missing during a ride in a vehicle purporting to be a taxi in the town centre, police said.

The force spokesperson said: "We are conducing multiple lines of enquiry to establish and confirm the identity of the people reported to be operating the unlicensed taxis.

"We are working to establish if there are any links between the incidents, and keeping an open mind throughout that process."

Officers have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to contact the force.

They are "particularly keen to see any dashcam footage which may have captured vehicles without valid licences approaching members of the public".

Lincolnshire Police issued a reminder to people that taxis in Lincolnshire have to display a valid licence showing the driver's permit details.
