Woman raped by taxi driver

A WOMAN was raped by a taxi driver as he drove her home.
The 20-year-old victim got into the cab on Wallgate, in Wigan, at about 4.15am on Sunday after an evening out with friends.
A man shared the taxi with her and he was dropped off near Pemberton train station and Foundry Lane.
A short time later, it stopped near the Venture pub, on Billinge Road, Pemberton, where the driver raped her nside the vehicle.
The victim broke free and ran away to raise the alarm.
A 31-year-old was arrested on suspicion of rape. He has been bailed until January 9 pending further inquiries.
Police are appealing to anyone who has information about the incident to come forward.
Detective Sergeant Clare Devlin said: "We are particularly keen to hear from the man who shared the taxi with the victim that night. I would stress we do not suspect him of any wrongdoing, but he is clearly a vital witness and his account of what happened that night could be the key to our investigation."
