Woman raped by taxi driver

A WOMAN was raped by a taxi driver as he drove her home.

The 20-year-old victim got into the cab on Wallgate, in Wigan, at about 4.15am on Sunday after an evening out with friends.

A man shared the taxi with her and he was dropped off near Pemberton train station and Foundry Lane.

A short time later, it stopped near the Venture pub, on Billinge Road, Pemberton, where the driver raped her nside the vehicle.

The victim broke free and ran away to raise the alarm.

A 31-year-old was arrested on suspicion of rape. He has been bailed until January 9 pending further inquiries.

Police are appealing to anyone who has information about the incident to come forward.

Detective Sergeant Clare Devlin said: "We are particularly keen to hear from the man who shared the taxi with the victim that night. I would stress we do not suspect him of any wrongdoing, but he is clearly a vital witness and his account of what happened that night could be the key to our investigation."

this was not , i repeat a TAXI DRIVER. a TAXI DRIVER is a licensed hackney carrage./ or saloon with a top light. Please resouce your information properly, the driver was a PRIVATE HIRE DRIVER, who picked up a booked job. there are approx 140 hackney carrage vehicle's in wigan, who do not wish to be associated with this slander. I am a member of the T&GWU and hope this is post is corrected. We the Taxi drivers are currently seeking advice from our union. Thankyou to all who understand.

We have had to put up with this type of slander for thirty years in London. There are approx seven rapes and sexual assaults every month, committed by licensed and unlicensed Private hire drivers.

Licensing mini cabs half the attacks, but seven is still unaceptable.
The media does not distinguish between a PHV driver and a Hackney carriage driver. To them we are all taxis drivers.
We must not just sit back and take it, we have to complain everytime we notice this, directly to the editor and ask for an apology to be published. I have complained many times to the BBC and have, on several occasions, had corrections broadcast.
But they still persist in doing it.

I've edited the post, evn though I didnt write it in the first place, I presume the use of quotation marks will suffice?

Or do you want me to telephone the Manchester Evening News, who have a circulation of far more than TDO, demanding the death of the original reporter?

So what if he was a PH driver? Do PH drivers have different CRB checks than taxi drivers?

By the way you didn't need to say you where a member of the T&G, I would have worked that out for myself.

1066 ... sussex, I sincerley hope that not all drivers come out with reply's like yours in your 1066 county. cos if they do, im selling up and moving to your county, i could make thousands every week. wake up man smell the coffee DUDE we live in 2008. not 1066.....

To be honest I can't see what the problem is with all this taxi/PH confusion via the press.

The bloke who raped the lady might well be a PH driver, he most probably isn't a taxi driver, so f***ing what.

The person is a rapist.

The fitness checks are the same for taxi drivers and PH drivers, so it doesn't matter which vehicle a rapist may drive, those checks have failed.

Or are drivers of taxis checked to a higher level than PH in your area, cos they ain't down here?

No matter how many attempts are made at educating the media both the press and the police will never change their opinion or reconcile the fact, that there is a distinction between hackney carriage and private hire.
