Nope, but unrestricting won't mean immigrants won't still be driving them, infact if you open it up they will all flood down to license their own, along with all the other fools who think they will carpet bag.


Higher standards would be a good thing, but what happens when the council says no badge you aren't up to scratch enough and the Government over rules it and says get em off the dole for us, which is happening, we've an Asian who cannot speak English driving, and he is licensed.


The solution to the problem is rigourous enforcement of one man one plate must drive it 25 hrs pw minimum, then you'll see the end of barons.

I can't believe you can't see what I say to be how it will be, there are cities all over the UK that the taxi trade is flooded out since limits lifted, I intend to do another 20 years and I don't want to, one lose my investment or have the roads turned into the Brands Hatch demolition derby meeting all week.

I don't care who drives a cab as long as they have passed the required standards. And the higher the standards the better.

Restrictions lead to the butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker owning plates, and licensed drivers having to feed their fat guts. That IMO has no place in this trade.

I see it, but can't work out the difference between an unrestricted taxi trade and an unrestricted PH trade. The PH trade have flourished without restrictions.

Why can't the taxi trade do likewise?

There is a finite market of X. That market will be satisfied by H and P vehicles where H are hacks and P are PHV.

X=H+P.

Regardless of how many H are licensed, P will expand to satisfy the demand. If sufficient H are licensed to meet the demand X, very few P will be licensed.

In our borough, we have some 250 H and only 30-ish P; A ratio of over 8:1. One of the protagonists against deregulation on here is in a city where regulation has permitted the growth of what is probably one of the largest PHV companies in the country. I don't know the balance of H:P but, I'll guarantee the 8:1 ratio is round the other way and greatly exceeded. And that situation was brought about by regulation of numbers of H. The market will always, always win!!!

Suggested reading: Economics Made Simple; Or some such similar title. It's very orthwhile and will put YOU more in control of your destiny if you understand the basics of the conditions under which you are trading.

Basic economics.... now that's a laugh.... in Sefton we have 271 Hackney's that mainly work the road and 2700 private hire... that work the radio/ set.... in and out of Sefton.
If the Hackney fleet had expanded, we would have 3000 Hackney's. and they would all be working for the private hire companies..... and the private hire companies would be totally in control.....

Sefton doesn't support 2700 PH since much of their trade is from out of their area. The situation there is fairly unique, wouldn't you agree?
That does complicate the basic economics argument put forward here, and makes it a poor example to use.
BTW How many PH do you suppose Sefton would have if they worked only in Sefton?

The private hire companies may not be totally in control, but their market position could hardly be described as anything other than dominant.

I think cabbyman is close to the mark with what he says. However, I think the equation should read:

X= (HxY)+(PxZ)

Where Y is the average number of drivers per Hack and Z is the average number of drivers per PH.

He is also correct that the market always finds it's own level, regardless of how it is manipulated.
That level will benefit some and disadvantage others, depending on how it is manipulated.
