TBH Sussex, I don't see how your anti-restriction views can sit comfortably with your views on this.
Surely the bus company should have a right to compete in a free market, just as we should have?

Well I do.

There is a massive difference between wanting open access to everyone who is 'fit and proper' to operate a 'fit and proper' vehicle, and not wanting customers to go elsewhere for their home bound services.

And is it a free market when buses are subsidised by the council, the fuel is subsidised by the government, and it appears the buses are being protected for free by the police?
Hmm some on here would consider phoning a PH as going elsewhere.
The police, it could be argued, are protecting the public from each other.
Is it a free market when entry standards for PH are lower than HC?
Sounds as though you're arguing for wider restriction, not a free market. The observation about the vulnerable young lady sounds like something I'd have expected from Edinburgh, and TBA I'd have thought she'd be more at risk walking home or going in some illegal taxi?

I'll give you the argument about fuel and subsidies. If anyone should be subbing these buses, it should be the same people creating the problem - pubs and clubs - not the rest of us.

The entry standards aren't an issue, the issue is that something is free and open to all that meet whatever criteria.

That criteria being defined by you, it seems.

Not really, although I'm a fan of a stiff criteria.

The entry criteria to the PSV industry is far stricter than for the taxi or ph industry.

I would suspect the bus service has been put out to competitive tender by the county council and Centra have been successful in their bid. A lot of evening and Sunday services are tendered by the county council under whatever guise, so it's nothing new. I used to run a lot of subsidised buses for Surrey County Council.

If your profit from taxi driving relies only on the Friday evening trade, that suggests you're not pricing the rest of your work properly! I seem to survive without the Friday evening drunks.

From experience, I'd give the night bus 3 months and it will be withdrawn. they tried one in Ashford (Kent) a few years back and the damage to seats made it unviable; in Folkestone it simply didn't attract many passengers and was withdrawn. So I wouldn't worry too much.

Not sure that applied to the Tuk Tuks that operated via the PSV system in B&H.

If they have a psv O licence the requirement is the same: £7500 for the first O licence disc, then about £5k for every additional disc authorised in readily-available funds, the standard O licence requirement! A qualified transport manager, driver CPCs, regular routine safety checks, off-road parking and maintenance facilities, the need to register routes, the need to keep to published timetables...shall I go on?

The Traffic Commissioner and VOSA are keeping a close eye on "novelty vehicle" operations of whatever size!

For the 6 O licences I have authorised, I have to keep about £42k in reserve in the bank at all times.
