ok the mrs has agreed that me becoming a cabbie may well be the answer that we a re looking for
but wereas i would just jack in me job and get be licence and away we go ,mrs would like to no lickly costs per week of running a cab

so is it better to rent a car to start of with whats the avg cost per week to rent a cab and does this include maintenece ,i figure that if it works out after 12 months then i will look at buying /lease a car

how much is a PH plate perweek /does this include radio or is that a seperate outlay

is it better to be vat regested or not ,what exactly can i claim for .are there limits to driving time like in the PCV world ,

It might help if you inform us in which authority you intend to apply for a license, and if you intend to work on Hackney or private hire. Some authorities restrict the number of Hackney carriage licenses but you can always jockey for an existing owner. If the authority does not restrict Hackney carriage licenses then you might consider buying your own vehicle. Whatever you decide you will certainly have to pass some type of local knowledge test for a hackney Badge and in a lot of cases you will have to pass a similiar test for a Private hire license.

i would be in nottingham and would be going private hire initily ,
i have no worries about the test as i am a bus driver and have a very good knowledge of the city .

Your best bet is to speak to the local licensing officer, and the largest PH firm in town, if you want to go PH, or cab firm, if you want to drive a taxi.

If you want to work unsociable hours you will do just fine whatever you drive, but if you want to work 9 till 5 monday to friday, then stay on the buses.

There are lots of different scenarios, so you should enquire at individual PH offices to see what deals they offer. Roughly speaking you will be looking at up to 100 a week for a radio, the same to run a car and the same for fuel, depending on how much work you do.

The council fee for the plate is unlikely to be more than a fiver a week, but you have to pay it in a oner.

Renting is a good idea until you find your feet, and this is likely to include radio, car and plate fees. Yoy might have to maintain the car out of your own pocket, but as I said each office has its own arrangements.




You're better not to be VAT-registered, but you won't have to worry about that until you have your own fleet of cars anway.

There's a 24 hour, 7 days a week limit on driving time, but I would pick your own hours and not do too much
