Well I work in a 'deregulated area', and I can't see the problem, and that's the scenario in most of the UK's LAs.

The reason we go 'round and round' is because people like yourself never answer the questions posed (like the ones I posted above) and then revert back to the old bus analogy, which is hardly a good one.

Tell me, what's so bad about the 'deregulated' London trade, after all, it's often claimed to be the best in the world, and GBC keeps on telling us how good the job is and how much he is earning.

And I'm not sure about your reference to kebab vans being regulated, since I've always advocated tougher regulation for the trade, but not the twisted nonsense of plate restrictions.

By contrast, many plate holders in restricted areas want weaker regulation, for example by dumbing down knowledge tests, and Edinburgh is a good example.

So more drivers and more cabs on the ranks, but hey, that's OK since as long as they're not in their own motor.

Well there used to be a guy from Sheffield on the forums, and he thought it was great, because he was allowed to run his own cab.

As for Swindon, weren't they moaning about the more stringent knowledge test, not because it was leading to less cabs on the ranks, but because it was leading to less drivers in their cabs - do as I say, not as I do.

Of course people will moan if they've been afforded preferential treatment in the past and are suddenly faced with a level playing field (whatever next?), but that's hardly a reason to reinstate quotas.

And in any case, it's just symptomatic of that classic Adam Smith quote, and again it just demsontrates why the authorities should stand firm and not give in.

Let's face it, the vast majority of those supporting quotas would be apoplectic if other businesses were up to this, but as usual it's do as I say, not as I do.

fyi - i drive my own motor and dont want no numpty driver.

but tell me where are these extra customers going to appear from? thin air? where are all these extra cars going to park? on top of each other? i dont know why you keep going on about Adam Smith, thier is NO collusion, the customers are not being deprived, they can ring PH, catch a bus, or walk, they already have choices.

let me explain the kebab van analogy to you, thier can only be a finite number of kebab van licenses, they can only park at certain points, but if i want one i have to wait or i can buy the licence in the grey market, so basically i am being deprived the opportunity of running my own kebab van.

You see its exactly the same as black cabs, thier is only a finite number of work for us, but you guys would rather we go round and round..............

Surely they are going to come from the same place as the hundreds of new cabs?

The thing I can't quite work out is why anyone would think drivers are so thick that they are going to spend up to £30,000 if they aren't going to earn a bean.

you see you said it "hundreds of black cabs" does not mean that thier will be hundreds of new customers, they will need thousands to survive and i just cant see it.

No my point is that it's all bollocks.

There will not be thousands of more people suddenly wanting cabs, nor will there be thousands of new cab owners.

And even if there was thousands of new cab owners, I would say 95% of them are already meeting the current demand. Even as cab jockies, or PH owners/jockies.

well I do not not know for sure that I do support quotas per se, but I dont know if I support total de-limiting in the Local if that is not what the people want, I think this has turned into a wider issue for me,

Change is okay, but change for the sake of change, I dont know?

The other thing that I would be concerned about is those drivers that do not wish to purchase a vehicle and go through the new high quality! mind altering driver training, what happens there?

Would they be forced to puchase a vehicle of their own because there would not be so many people looking for someone to rent their Cab?

Eh? What? Money? No the games dead, better off on the dole!

Yes we are 'deregulated' here in London, but are 'quality' controlled by means of an average two and a half years of non earning whilst on the 'K'.

Plus I would say London is fairly unique in that it attracts millions every year, who use the trade to get around, avoiding our public transport system. (and minicabs)

Obviously a rural market town in Shropshire may be somewhat different, especialy in the quiet months.
