If you look on ghe london uber forum, they reckon it's a done deal and they've won. Thing is these uber goons are real muppets, don't they realise that as soon as Travis gets a whiff of the self driving car, they will all be consigned to the scrap heap, Travis and his highly paid executives won't have to deal with these muppets.

High Court to rule if Uber app breaks law


Uber could soon be a thing of a past - if a High Court judge rules the smartphone app is illegal.

A judge will rule if fares calculated using GPS technology are illegal.

Black cab drivers have been involved in a long-standing battle with the app makers.

They want Uber banned arguing it constitutes metering and is therefore breaking the law.

But Uber, which uses GPS technology to bring up fares, denies the app is a meter and insists whatever the outcome it will still operate in London.

A spokesman said: "We believe the Uber app on a partner-driver's phone is not a taximeter, and Transport for London - the regulator - shares this view.

"We are looking forward to getting binding clarity on this issue in the High Court."

If Uber passes the legal hurdle, it may still face a clampdown under new rules.

They include the introduction of at least a five minute interval between a booking and the start of a journey, to allow drivers to plan an appropriate route.

Other proposals involve a requirement for drivers to pass an English language test and a map reading assessment.

While firms might have to operate a fixed landline telephone and accept bookings up to seven days in advance.

Uber has collected thousands of names from customers in a petition and warned the changes "will mean an end to the Uber you know and love".

Today Uber, tomorrow or some other day it'll just be someone else, these trendyisms have a habit of coming and going as regularly as the tides do....Yet you me and most of the other Diehards still tootle along as we have done for many a year and will do for many more.

Uber wins high court case over app

The minicabi-booking service Uber has received a boost after the high court ruled that its app was legal in London. Had it lost the case, the company would have been forced to change its service to comply with rules that protect black-cab drivers.

The city’s transport regulator, Transport for London (TfL), had brought the case after pressure from the capital’s black-cab and minicab drivers, who claimed the Uber app was being used as a taximeter. The taximeter is a privilege afforded only to black-cab drivers in return for the extensive training they undergo to learn London’s streets.

But Lord Justice Ouseley ruled that Uber’s mobile service did not constitute a taximeter. “A taximeter‎, for the purposes of section 11 of the Private Hire Vehicles Act 1998 does not include a device that receives GPS signals in the course of a journey, and forwards GPS data to a server located outside of the vehicle, which server calculates a fare that is partially or wholly determined by reference to distance travelled and time taken and sends the fare information back to the device,” he said.

Uber described the ruling as a victory for common sense and took aim at plans by Transport for London to impose new regulations on the company.

“Now the high court has ruled in favour of new technology, we hope Transport for London will think again on their bureaucratic proposals for apps like Uber,” said Jo Bertram, Uber’s regional general manager for UK, Ireland and the Nordics.

“Compulsory five-minute waits and banning ride-sharing would be bad for riders and drivers. These plans make no sense. That’s why 130,000 people have already signed our petition against these proposals. We hope TfL will listen to Londoners and let Uber keep London moving.”

Around 1 million people in London are signed up to the service, which has 18,000 drivers.

The TfL consultation on taxi apps includes the proposal of an interval of at least five minutes between booking an Uber journey and the driver picking up the passenger, in an attempt to stop instantaneous bookings.

Uber is in a series of disputes with regulators around the world.

This is the watershed I feel as this judgement will be used as a battering ram by Uber to take over Britain. The problem is that punters love the service. it is the epitome of the you got it culture which now dominates the Uk with everything available on demand at the click of a button and if punters like it there is little we can do to persuade them otherwise unless Uber gets a bad reputation for letting people down

Another piece of free publicity for uber - this taxi trade is as thick as pig sh*t

notice how frequently the articles use the word taxi - uber doing everything to associate their product with taxi - when in reality its another pre booking app

TfL win -win, and the London Taxi trade didn't see it coming?

Uber ride rough shod over every regulation uk wide and go into court v a local rule that they were always going to win.

Not that the entire London taxi trade were so naive and parochial but those that gave TfL this easy out have done the taxi trade no favours at all.

There are a number of London trade organisations, some new some not so and good luck to them with their efforts but not one highlighted the weakness in this case!
