(Edit - things have moved on fairly quickly since the post below, and that the MP actually did punch the man to the ground and then deliver several other blows is confirmed in the video link provided by Cerebrus below. And, of course, the video is all over the place now, so pretty unlikely anyone reading this now won't have seen it elsewhere.)

As regards taxi rank rucks this is pretty small beer in the grand scheme of things, apart from the fact that it involves a Labour MP :-o

And no conclusive evidence, but the various statements and the video evidence available suggests that the MP decked the guy :-o :-o

There are numerous photos and videos all over the internet, but the link to the Twitter video below is the longest one I've seen, and shows the man lying on the ground, which others don't show:

Labour MP Mike Amesbury issues statement as police investigate altercation at taxi rank

"I felt threatened" says the Labour MP

Cheshire Labour MP Mike Amesbury has issued a statement after footage emerged of him apparently in an altercation with a man at a taxi rank. Footage of the aftermath of the incident circulating on social media appears to show a man lying on the ground and Mr Amesbury standing over him, pointing his finger.

The MP for Runcorn and Helsby, and former Weaver Vale MP before the boundary change, has now issued a statement on the incident, saying he "felt threatened".

In the video he can then be heard to say: "You won't threaten your MP again'. He then leans over the man, points his finger at him and repeats: "You won't ever threaten your MP ever again, will you?

Mr Amesbury said: “Last night, I was involved in an incident that took place after I felt threatened on the street following an evening out with friends. This morning, I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what happened during this incident.

“I will not be making further public comment but will, of course, cooperate with any inquiries if required by Cheshire Police. I remain fully committed to working hard for the people of Runcorn and Helsby, and am determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community.”

Cheshire Police have confirmed that an investigation into the incident is being undertaken.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: "At 2.48am on Saturday 26 October, police were called to reports of an assault in Frodsham. A caller reported he had been assaulted by a man in Main Street. Enquiries are ongoing."

The Labour Party has also released a statement independent of Mr Amesbury's, insisting the MP will "co-operate with inquiries".

A spokesperson for the Labour Party said: "We are aware of an incident that took place last night involving Mike Amesbury MP. We understand that Mr Amesbury approached Cheshire Police to report what happened this morning himself, and that he will co-operate with any inquiries they have."

If it was a driver they would be found to be not fit and proper but what's the betting the mp gets away with it

CCTV footage shows 2 guys talking and then one launches a punch at the other, putting him to the ground before moving in and throwing a few more, before other people come in to drag him away.

I believe this one will run and run.

A lesson to all those with letters after their name that they need to be very careful with their actions.

Especially when out on the pi**.

Ooft - pretty conclusive that it's hardly self defence, or anything like that.

I'd guess that's his tenure as an MP well and truly over [-X

Of course, I wondered about the taxi rank angle, because certainly no evidence of a rank in the videos, nor any sign of a discernible queue, which is clearly often the cause of rucks like this :-o

But turns out it's one of those 'taxi ranks' which is actually what most of us would call an 'office' (I'd guess) :?

Anyway, most of this MEN piece is largely rehash, so the bits below are just extracts relevant to the 'taxi' angle, but there's not much to it.

So although it looks like he was waiting for a 'taxi', whether there's a direct trade angle to it is unclear. But from the comments in the video with the audio I'd guess it was a row about politics rather than over waiting for a car, or whatever...

Taxi rank owner speaks out after Labour MP Mike Amesbury caught on camera 'punching man to the ground' in street

https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk ... t-30237900

"You’re an MP. You have to react a different way"

[...]Mike Amesbury, MP for Runcorn and Helsby, previously issued a statement after a clip, shared to social media, appeared to show him pointing at a man on the ground beside a taxi rank and saying: "You won't ever threaten me again, will you?"

And new CCTV footage, now released by the Daily Mail, appears to show the MP punching the man before he fell to the ground outside a taxi rank, before continuing to throw multiple other blows at him.[...]

[...]John Roberts, the owner of the taxi company on Main Street, reiterated how the footage he had seen showed a punch being thrown and a man then lying on the ground.

He added the MP had been outside the taxi premises waiting for a taxi when a dispute began. Mr Roberts said: "The police have called at the office to ask for the CCTV of the incident. It happened at 2.18am today... The police said it was a high-profile investigation".[...]

and it looks like he's been suspended by his party but he's still an MP

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c6244gk9d4po

Labour MP Mike Amesbury has been suspended from the party and has had the whip withdrawn, after CCTV footage emerged appearing to show him punching a man to the ground.

long article follows mostly rehash of other sources by the look of it

You can't be sacked as an MP. There are not many ways to actually remove an MP.
They can resign.
They can die.
They can be subject to a recall petition.
And that is about it.

This is the office here - obviously no taxi 'rank' as most of us would define it - looks like a pretty bog standard office, but with the on-street parking at right angles rather than the more conventional layout.

(Not sure if these links work in a mobile phone browser, or whatever, but I usually view them using a Windows PC, and the link works on both Firefox and Edge browsers...)

Regulars will know I'm often cynical about driver recruitment spiel, but this incident underlines some of it as regards the firm's Drivers Wanted page, at least if you assume that MP Mike might cut up rough while actually in the taxi :-o

Do you like meeting people from all walks of life? A taxi driver job might be a good fit for you.

Yes, it's great meeting interesting people from all walks of life every day.

Unless they want to batter you, obviously
